That was my immediate thought when reading this... the idea is nice, but there will be nothing "organic" about any of these plantings when they are receiving a constant rain of highway byproducts.

I totally agree. SF is doing fine putting train tracks on highway medians.

Screw the medians. Get the gardens into the public parks. Huge farms in Golden Gate Park, Doloras Park, small farms in planter boxes everywhere. Get the city working with the professional gardeners at the already existing urban farm coops. Teamed up with the already thriving "friends of parks" system this shouldn't be a big deal to pull off.
