That's the correct answer. Seriously, sociology? Ask some PhD student studying some obscure sociological theory and see how much she feels like she has sociology "down." She doesn't. Because a whole field like that is freaking huge. And even small sub-fields are riddled with complexity. Virtually every-fuckin'-thing is riddled with complexity. It's just the nature of reality.

Do all of your socks in your sock drawer have matching buddies too?

[–]Calmiche 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That one is easy. Get together $70. Throw out everything in your sock drawer. Go and buy some good cotton packs of socks, all the same type. Repeat if you wear dress socks. I like these black ones, and the same brand for black. They sell them at Target too. Buy 18 of the ones you wear the most and 12 of the ones you wear to relax.

Best thing I ever did. Made laundry and finding socks in the morning 100x easier.

[–]Shagomir 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]Son_of_Kong 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The less costly solution is, after you do your laundry, set your socks aside; match the pairs and roll one sock partly up into the other. That way when you reach into your drawer you don't have to search for two separate socks, you just pull out one balled pair. It also allows you to know immediately when you've lost one, instead of searching frantically when you're getting dressed, going "God dammit, where's the other fucking sock."

I'm proud to say that I'm one of two or three people that have ever studied archeoastronomy at Tiwanaku in Bolivia. Pretty much all that means is that I am trying to find cosmic alignments with some of the architecture at the archeological site.

Dance Dance Revolution. Don't laugh at me.

There are a number of metrics involved in every song, and they're important for those in the know : crossovers, streaming, note length, "chaos", BPM...

There are play styles too.

Then there is the machine itself. I can hack arcade machines so I can play for free, or I can add my own songs to the game.

It's really cool going to the local arcade and playing balls to the walls with other expert gamers. Just tell a dude "This song is 155 4th streaming, with a 6th run at the 4 minutes mark and hand play at the end, no crossovers" and he'll know whether or not he wants to play that song with you.

Late edit that no one will see : post-DDR sex with your DDR chick is the best sex.

I as well. I played in competitions for accuracy in high school. My dominance of Sakura on heavy (2x, with boost muahahah) won me a small money prize. I never caught on with machine hacking, I normally played legit and followed the quarter system. My favorite venue was a dingy basement arcade in Chinatown, NYC where ddr kids of all races, age and callings convened to play each other in a dark crowded room with huge speakers jury-rigged to the machine and an old lady who judged style.

Sadly, a heart condition ended my career early, but I still show off in arcades from time to time. Im happy to see a fellow ddr-redditor. :)

PS: Sakura is easy peasy compared to most of the stuff on ITG. It's basically 300 BPM 2nd no streaming, so approx 30% to 50% slower than the stuff I usually indulge in.

I remember when I passed Pandemonium, my friend asked me how it felt when I got on to those final holds. I said, "... what holds?" I had no idea what he was talking about, because after about halfway through the song my brain shut off and my feet just unconsciously followed the steps.

I do, however, remember when I failed Salieri Strikes back 10 steps from the end. 10 pissy little steps.

Also, it is possible to understand a human constructed topic completely. While somebody may never even hope to understand all there is to know about the science of rabbits, they could understand everything about the German language.

Audio.

I'll go the videogame angle though: I am pretty confident in my Quake3Arena/QuakeLive skills.

Its a pretty complex game when you get down to it. Duelling plays a lot like a board game. The game is more about resource control, power-ups are timed and you can have an entire metagame based on timing when the power-ups respawn and how you decide to position yourself on the map relative to location and resources. Of course, you should have all of the maps memorized and readily accessible in your mind visually.

I always like to show this video that has Rapha doing a complete run-through of his victory match:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdkDjsBiO58

However, before you even duel you should have all the elements of Quake already mastered. From dead-accurate rail shots (you can mostly kill someone with one shot, but you have to worry about the recharge penalty which leaves you vulnerable) to rocket jumping, strafe jumping, dodging (if you have ten rockets sprayed at you, can you avoid every single one?), to everything in between.

Abseiling/rappelling. (Although I would probably have to restrict that to hiking, climbing, and mountaineering techniques, and leave out industrial rope access techniques)

If you're stuck at the top of a cliff with a rope I can get you down. With enough rope I can rig it so you can pull the rope down afterwards. I can improvise a mechanical friction device out of carabiners, tie a special friction hitch, or even just wrap the rope around my body in such a way that you can (painfully!) descend.

I can rig an autolocking plate and loop of cord so that you can abseil halfway down, stop, take both hands off and fiddle with something on the wall, then climb back up the rope several meters, and then descend again, all smoothly. I can abseil with a heavy pack or with an injured person.

And every time I go off the edge off a big cliff it still scares the shit out of me.

HTML5 Canvas.

It started innocently enough. Learn a few things, maybe help a few people along the way.

Now apparently I'm the top Canvas answerer of all time on Stack Overflow. I also write tutorials, which causes people to email me asking me to help them with their Canvas problems. I always answer them, even if I don't have the time to do an implementation for them. I really do want Canvas to succeed as a webapp platform.

It's not a particularly complex topic, but I've done quite a bit with it. I implemented in-canvas scrollbars. I faked DOM scrollbarss as if they were really part of the Canvas.. A Canvas library I'm writing - over 60,000 lines now - turns it from a low-level drawing surface into a fully-fledged diagramming platform with worlds of features. I learned a lot of quirky things experimenting along the way.

Somehow I ended up starting an e-book on Canvas performance. I do hope I have the courage to finish it.

Surprisingly, I can only think of a handful.

Debunking conspiracy theories can upset people. People want mystique, people want to rationalize and cope with events, so they fabricate stories and theories in order to better handle either events or feelings of mistrust or other emotions.

There are holes in this explaining many theories but it isn't a stretch to say people invent coping mechanisms.

People, as a whole, can be mistrustful, superstitious and fearful of the unknown.

Which conspiracy theory is most likely true?

The Bilderberg Group (albeit they're not "the illuminati"). There's election fraud, but I don't think the Presidential elections has been "rigged" since Gore-Bush. Winning the popular vote but failing to win the election felt like someone pulled something.

Most of this is speculation. Twinkles can last forever.

That wasn't.

One book I need to find the time to read is "Among the Truthers" by Jonathan Kay. He calls some conspiracy theorists middle aged men with too much time on their hands. He was an an debate show with 9/11 theorists and the look on their faces was funny and were in complete denial because they all were older and spent way too much time on the subject.

But lol @ thinking anyone in the world is actually an "expert" at chess in the true sense of the word. (At my current level, I know probably 1% of the openings that a grandmaster would know)

Ok, so do infitesimal quantities actually exist? How are partial derivatives commutative?

And finally, how the hell are complex integrals like the inverse Laplace and Fourier transforms made rigorous? I mean sure i is 'just' another number and everyone knows the exponential function is special, but that introductory complex analysis I did was, well, complex.

Ok, so do infitesimal quantities actually exist?

Only in non-standard analysis.

How are partial derivatives commutative?

This isn't that bad a result you just go through the details and you get the same thing.

And finally, how the hell are complex integrals like the inverse Laplace and Fourier transforms made rigorous? I mean sure i is 'just' another number and everyone knows the exponential function is special, but that introductory complex analysis I did was, well, complex.

You just need more complex analysis is all.

The cardinality of infinite sets.

For instance, the set of natural numbers (1,2,3... and on to infinity), the whole numbers (0,1,2,3...), and the integers (...-2,-1,0,1,2...) all have the same number of numbers in them, although it seems intuitive that the set of integers has twice as many as does the set of naturals. The simple version of the proof lies in the knowledge of one-to-one transference. You can always find a positive natural number to match any integer, to infinity, because they're infinite sets.

The same is not true for the real numbers, which involve an infinite number of numbers between each number. That's not the actual reason -- the actual reason can be understood in Cantor's diagonal proof.

*Edit: Disregard this; I know nothing about infinite sets. *

Understand completely eh? I expect a discussion and refutation of Russel's Paradox, followed by a proof of the Continuum Hypothesis. And no cop-outs about how "I have a truly marvellous proof which this comment reply is too small to contain"

And seriously, what is a real number anyway?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But to really understand the cardinality of infinite sets you have to understand much more than that. You need to understand how your choice of axioms effects the cardinality of infinite sets. Which is to say you need a complete grasp of cardinal numbers and so forth.

While it has pretty much no practical everyday use, I can identify most United SOF groups by what they're using. From that I've learned pretty heavily what is considered 'collectible' in the world of modern militaria and make myself decent money buying and reselling that. Although the market is fairly limited, things will fetch absurd prices, like 1000+ for a pair of pants or shirt and so on.
