In before the shibari jokes.

But seriously, teaching them some basic knots would be pretty awesome. Like, how to do a proper square knot, bowline, etc. It really comes in useful for all sorts of stuff.

This is what I was thinking, but I feel like they won't be too interested and just shrug it off. I taught myself how to make a lasso, but i'm only able to divide the rope up to where they would each have ten feet and that doesn't seem like enough. I'm wanting something fun that will keep their attention.

This will sound totally sexist, but knitting/crocheting. It's actually not too bad of a skill to have, especially if you're broke and don't have much money to spend on gifts. Just buy some yarn and knit a hat for winter. Plus, it takes about 10 minutes to pick up the technique and then only a little bit of practice to refine it.

If you have a lot of rope, go with teaching knots. Though I personally don't know many knots (I was never taught) apparently knowing a lot of knots is very practical.

How to use a map. You would be surprised how many people can't do that.

No. Real maps. Get a bunch from AAA and make it a game. Give them a variety of things they have to figure out like how to find city buildings or the difference between freeways and roads. Give them different colored pens and hi-lighters. Give them addresses to look up, etc. Make it a treasure hunt for them.

You can also ask them to write directions from one place to another. They can do it orally too. It's important for them to be able to communicate directions and maps, especially physical ones, help children think spatially. It would also help them practice following directions and learning the importance of sequencing directions.

I worked with 18 and 19 year olds and you would be amazed at how few of them could navigate a college. They got lost all the time and would get confused looking at a physical map and could follow simple directions. So this would be really helpful to them.
