That page gives me a minor scare every time I visit it. There's just something about that picture.

That one. Not just creepy, but genuinely conspiracy-ish.

Plus the guy kinda looks like my grandfather, that's creepy.

Honestly, that's all that makes sense in my mind.

Although It can't happen, it would be cool to know exactly what happened. I think someone should Make a Similar story, and then reveal the conclusion. I'm not sure where I was going with this.

There's new information on the Wikipedia page from the last time I read it, relating to new information about his identity. Still weird, though.

Zodiac Killer. I know he's most likely dead, but the fact that only 1 of his 3 cryptic letters have been decoded is really creepy. And the 1 that they did decode is weird as fuck:

I like killing people because it is so much fun it is more fun than killing wild game in the forrest because man is the most dangeroue anamal of all to kill something gives me the most thrilling experence it is even better than getting your rocks off with a girl the best part of it is that when I die I will be reborn in paradice and all the (people) I have killed will become my slaves I will not give you my name because you will try to sloi down or stop my collecting of slaves for my afterlife ebeorietemethhpiti

That idea has always messed me up. How many codes/ciphers go unbroken because the writer can't spell?

[–]jimflaigle 85 points86 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Intentional misspelling is a standard cryptography technique, right up there with inserting gibberish characters. For instance:

achtyijqlmwlctopy rlwsruvwrydlsjdwn

Looks like nothing. but only take every third character, and you get "hillo wurld" (hello world) without even using a numerical transform. And using non-words makes it easy for humans to understand the message, but very difficult for a computer to automatically pick it out.

That note reminds me of a short story I read for an English class. Without giving too much away, the antagonist got bored of hunting animals and went after humans instead. Weird coincidence.

The most dangerous game is required reading. I always liked the bit with the tracks in the snow.

[–]JustOneVote 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sure this guy picked up the phrase "most dangerous game" from that story. The difference is, in the story, the guy captures a another skilled hunter, lets him know that he's going to hunt him, and gives his "prey" a head start, to make it challenging for himself. The Zodiac Killer just walked up to people who were making out in the park or whatever and shot them. So, he's not quite the badass he thinks he is.

That is actually really freaky.

[–]MeloJelo 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, it's not really freaky at all.

Kyle was treated for schizophrenia between October 2004 and January 2005. In August 2008, Kyle was evaluated by neuropsychologist Dr. Jason A. King. King concluded that Kyle has dissociative amnesia, a form of mental illness.[7]

If he has mental disorders, there's a good chance he was homeless for quite a while (which was also indicated by other evidence) and probably would have lost contact with all friends and family (assuming any are still alive) long ago. Even if he had some acquaintances, he likely was not close to them if he had schizophrenia. Building and maintaining any kind of relationship can be nearly impossible with an un-medicated severely schizophrenic or very mentally ill person.

[–]RJBuggy 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeah, this is the answer. i'm a nurse, in the hospital there are many homeless pts without insurance. social workers often search for a next of kin, friend, anybody really. you would be surprised how many people have NOBODY in their lives. somebody out there know BK, they just don't want anything to do with him.

The Girl Scout Murders. On the first night of resident camp in 1977, three girls were raped and murdered during the night and found in the morning left in a field. There was actually a trial but the person was acquitted and died 3 months later and there is a HUGE question as to whether he actually did it. It's still an open case with a lot of interest.

The creepy part, aside from the 8, 9, and 10 year old girls who were murdered in the middle of the night, is that there is a lot of evidence that someone was watching the camp and doing weird shit prior to the murders. This is the Wikipedia site and this is a private site with a lot of good info.

This is extremely creepy to me because I went to Girl Scout camp and I recognize how totally possible this is. It's really interesting stuff, and there are a lot of people still trying to solve the case.

Seems consistent with frequency dispersion from an impulsive source in a channel... I wonder if anyone has tried to deconvolve it with a typical SOFAR response.

English translation: probably an explosion or implosion (they're the same as far as acoustics is concerned), and sounds get modified as they transmit through water because of reasons.

Yeah. My mind is running wild on what the hell it could be used for.

[–]viruses_win 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My personal favorite theory is that it's a Russian nuclear early warning system. I.e., when UVB 76 stops, the world ends.

[–]zero_iq 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Rather than an early warning system, there is a theory that one or more of the russian numbers stations might operate as a "Dead Hand" nuclear strike system.

If the radio broadcast ever fails (i.e. russia is hit by nukes, which disrupts the broadcast), it would trigger automated strikes against pre-arranged targets. This tactic is designed to prevent pre-emptive strikes against the nuclear command: neutralizing the command guarantees a retaliation even if the enemy command is wiped out. The changing messages could be timecodes and digests that are used to authenticate the signal (otherwise an attacker could attempt to broadcast a 'fake' signal to replace the original and prevent the automated strikes).

It's not clear that the system actually exists, or if it's just a smokescreen to prevent pre-emptive strikes. Of course, you'd have to maintain the illusion it was real or it would become ineffective.

EDIT: just realised I misread your post and that's pretty much what you described. Oh well.

Its also been theorized that it is a mode of emergency communication, as voices have come on the frequency as well in "times of crisis", eg. 1991 and 2006.

I don't get why people get freaked out about number stations. You are on a computer, talking to other people using encoded messages sent as a stream of numbers. Number stations are just SSL encryption from before there was an internet. The government can broadcast encoded messages and have a reasonable expectation that the message can get through to people anywhere, but only be understood by certain individuals.

[–]Freddie_AppsHero 20 points21 points ago

2nd hand story, but I asked the people who were there and they all say it's true what happened that night. I'm a logical guy, can explain away most stuff and if I can't, I just dismiss it. But there's one story that I been told by 4 different people in my family at all different times and the story is the same.

One night on the rez, way back when, it must've been a year or two before I was born there was an incident. I pieced it together because I heard different accounts from different rooms in the house where it happened. It was my grandma's house and everybody was gathered there for some reason. I heard there was something weird going on in the hills or something so they all gathered together.

My sister said the adults got really nervous and sent all the kids to bed in the same room. There were a bunch of kids lined up sideways in one of the beds. She said that all of a sudden something started to bang on the walls trying to find a way into the house. She lay in bed with all the other kids and then the adults broke out hollering and yelling. They were holding the backdoor closed. There were 3 men there, my dad, my uncle, and... damn it, I can't remember the 3rd. The sound stopped and it was quiet for a few minutes. That's when one of the kids noticed a big shaggy head looking through the window at them. They all took off into the living room.

What was happening at the backdoor was the 3 men were leaning on the door and they couldn't hold the door shut tight. Something would ram the door and it would open a couple inches and they'd push back and slam it back shut. Now my dad and uncle were loggers, hauling around big ass chainsaws back in the day all day. whatever was outside was almost overpowering 3 of them. Finally, whatever it was left the backdoor, then they heard the kids screaming. Whatever it was must have gave up and left after looking through the window.

Next morning, when they finally got up the courage to go and look, they saw that everywhere that whatever it was touched was muddy. The closest creek was down a long hill. Mud prints where it was pushing on the door. Around the entire house. And at the window where the kids were in bed. The window is about 7 feet off the ground.

Now. Logically, it was just a bunch of rez drunks trying to break in. But, I asked and everybody who was there says that it wasn't. In those days, if it was drunks, dad would've just gotten a stick and gone to town on them. Not to mention my uncle who was protecting his mom's place that night.

What freaks me out about it is the mud and the big shaggy head part. To this day, if there's a window at night with the curtains open, I can't really look outside without a chill shooting up my spine.

Sorry if this is all fragmented in its writing, but I found this just as I was nodding off.

Freaky. Almost sounds like bigfoot, ya know? Have you talked to your dad about this?

[–]fastjeff 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, and mom and sister and grandma. I always thought they were all putting one over on little fj, but it's always the same story. Dad believes in bigfoots because he seen them. Closest he said he got was about 100 yards across a steep valley. He was cowboying down south of here and there it was across the way watching him. He said it was the freakiest feeling he ever had. He hustled his herd up after that.

There's this other story he told, only once because it's probably not a happy one. His 2 brothers were riding (horses of courses) around this mountain near here and they found 'something'. A little figurine or something, statue? A little carved something at this... how to explain. Like an altar I guess, in the middle of the woods, up this mountain. They took it and then started having bad luck. Very bad luck.

This was back when the area where I am was still pretty far behind the rest of the world. Roads would be closed for extended periods of time during winter and spring. Anyway, one of the brothers was working at the sawmill (just over the way from here, believe me, everything is just over there) with dad. They were out in the bush cutting down trees and hauling them in when a tree throned on my dad's brother (one of many uncles I never knew. Oh yeah, throned is what he calls it. When falling a tree and it splits up the middle before falling. Seen it happen a couple times and it's dangerous as hell) and it... smashed his insides. He managed to get him back to camp, but they couldn't get out and to town because the roads were too bad. So dad had to watch his brother die a long painful death.

So, one of the elders told somebody in dad's family that it had to be the thing they took. They had to bring it back. So that's what happened. Still, whatever it was must have followed because the other brother disappeared. Mom told me this story and I never asked dad about it. He is 1 out of 17 kids.

Damn, I had another story in my head when I started typing this and now I can't remember it. Had to do with sasquach. If I remember I'll type it later. Anyways, sounds like in the next year, somebody is going to be making a book out of all his stories.

Do you mean in the Exclusion Zone? There are actually about 12 people who live there because they refused to move. They haven't experienced any significant/noticeable effects (although I'm sure their lives have been shortened).

Also there are TONS of animals there because there are no people to hunt them. They are also surprisingly healthy with only rare mutations.

I'm not sure what you mean by "list" but here is a NPR story about the animal life in the Zone and here is a story from Der Spiegel about the people living there.

I hope that answers your question. :D

One of the eeriest mystery that I know of is the Dyatlov Pass incident.

[–]Qender 33 points34 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm often reminded of this as it seems the most unexplained. But I feel there's possibly a number of small boring explanations, they could have simply been lost and died of hypothermia, the missing clothing a common symptom of hypothermia, as could cutting open the tent in a panic, the extreme force damage could have been a fall from a height, the missing tongue sounds like an animal ate it, and the radiation could simply be they hiked or camped near radioactive rocks.

Either that or a radioactive bear killed them.

[–]PaulMcGannsShoes 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Remember, they didn't find the bodies until WEEKS after the incident, so a lot of shit that happened can be explained. In fact, all of it. Ever to the Cracked article above.

[–]DatsNos[S] 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just read up on this. Nothing about it makes sense. Altitude sickness/madness is out of the question, being injured by a human or animal is, too. Then there's the fact that they were all highly irradiated. If someone gave me a time machine, I'd love to investigate... from a distance.

[–]wizrad 46 points47 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cracked did an article on it. The things that freak people out are:

  1. The no-tongued woman

  2. A mysterious orange tan on the dead bodies

  3. The ripped tents

  4. The hikers' lack of clothing

  5. The crushing damage done to three of the hikers

  6. The traces of radioactivity

1 and #3 could easily be explained by scavengers (eyes and tongue being the first bits they'll go for), #3 and #5 can be explained by avalanche, #4 happens when people are suffering from hypothermia, #2 could be explained because they were left outside in snow for quite some time. #6? Well, #6 apparently didn't appear in accounts until later.

I get tired of this incident being brought up, there's nothing paranormal about a bunch of people getting hypothermia IN SIBERIA, then having their body mutilated by climate and animals from being left outside.

The "Cropsey" legend. Pretty much, there was this really old school/home for kids with learning disabilities on Statten island, it got shut down due to unsanitary conditions (these kids were litterally sitting in there own shit) when it got shut down, the state just let the kids and workers wonder the grounds and hope they'd find a new home. Years later, young kids WITH learning disabilities ended up disappearing. For a few of the children, their bodies were found buried in the grounds of the old insane asylum. Where there were obvious signs of someone still living on the grounds. They searched the grounds and found tunnels that lead all throughout the school, in these tunnels there were little "rooms" one of which had a pair of a young child's underwear on the ground. Creepy right? It gets worse. The people kept searching the grounds and found something that showed that whoever these people are, were Satan worshipers and SACRIFICED the children. Fucked up, huh? Wellc they found someone who they suspected of all the kidnappings/murders and realized he wasn't acting alone. There is a LARGE GROUP of these people who are still living on the grounds and doing this to young children with learning disabilities. It's a seriously fucked up thing. I saw a show about it, rent it or DVR it. It's definitely worth it. It's called "Cropsey" or visit www.cropseylegend.com

The disappearances of Mary Celeste and Roanoke Island

[–]wizrad 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Already posted what probably happened with the Mary Celeste, but the Roanoke Island thing isn't much of a mystery: when the new group of settlers came along, they found something like "CROATCHAN" carved into the tree. Whatever it was, it was the name of the local Native American tribe.

Suddenly the natives of the area started to have blond hair and blue eyes.

Hell, during Colonial America, apparently they had huge problems with people going native... the English sucked living in the New World.

I read somewhere that the Mary Celeste most likely had a small flash fire happen on the whiskey fumes from the kegs it was carrying. The people of the crew freaked out, hopped on a life boat...

They keep finding dead prostitutes buried on the beach where I live, and they don't know who's killing them. I think they found like 7 by now. The creepy part is, they always find the bodies when they're all decayed and practically unidentifiable. It makes me wonder how many dead bodies are around here that I don't know about, and how they haven't found the killer yet.

Worry not cowards, this story is not scary, but one of an amusing origin which is 100% true. So, it all started a couple years ago in March or April. My two friends and I were walking on a railroad track in the seascape, CA area. All of the sudden, a rock falls from the sky. We are just teenagers, so we are like, what. After that rock, another. And another. Rocks of all different sizes and shapes coming at different speeds and angles. This confused the hell out of us. The rocks were falling about a minute apart or so. We though one of us was throwing the rocks, because no one else was there. I had my brilliant idea of us holding hands and all looking at eachother. We do that. The rocks keep falling! And to add on to the pressure there's a damn old guy watching us from about 100 feet away. We watched him too, but he was not throwing the rocks. I thought it was some people throwing rocks at us. But I saw a rock fall from the sky! There's no way someone could throw it that far up! To this day, no one believes us. Does anyone know what happened?
