What is a small thing everyone should know? (self.AskReddit)
submitted 11 months ago by ItGotRidiculous
A few years back I watched a video on how to sneeze.
Changed my life. Now when I see people sneeze, all I can think is, "What an asshole, he's spreading germs everywhere and his form is terrible."
What is a small thing that you think everyone should know?
[–]OH_MY_STARS 1359 points1360 points1361 points 11 months ago
If you lose a lot of weight over a few months without really trying, get thee to a doctor. Classic cancer sign that is SO often ignored because the patient didn't see it as a problem.
[–]godlyfrog 584 points585 points586 points 11 months ago
It's also a sign of diabetes.
[–]etymological 77 points78 points79 points 11 months ago
And many autoimmune disorders, like Graves' disease.
[–]godlyfrog 107 points108 points109 points 11 months ago
The takeaway here is pretty much: if you're losing weight for no apparent reason; see a doctor.
[–]nermid 179 points180 points181 points 11 months ago
I've been dieting for six months, and now I'm worried that I have autoimmune sugar cancer.
[–]aquasucks 180 points181 points182 points 11 months ago
Since you've been dieting, it's not very likely that you have any of those. Probably just AIDS.
[–]Sillykittyfive 481 points482 points483 points 11 months ago
I stopped drinking soda once and lost like 50 lbs in a few months. I don't think it was cancer though. I think it was the soda.
[–]themicahnator 82 points83 points84 points 11 months ago
Thank you! No one believes me when I tell them I lost 25lbs just from not drinking soda anymore.

Fun fact, it is no longer the Heimlich maneuver. Heimlich sued the American Red Cross saying they cannot use his name. It is now something along the lines of a chest and back thrust.
Source: I am a lifeguard.
[–]JessicaMaple 309 points310 points311 points 11 months ago
Abdominal thrust or 'The Maneuver Formerly Known as Heimlich' in my EMT classes. lol
[–]_kossak_ 112 points113 points114 points 11 months ago
Why didn't Mr. Heimlich want his name on the maneuver? I'd love to have something nice called _kossak_'s maneuver...
[–]ironically_hip 99 points100 points101 points 11 months ago
Really, though. This maneuver has probably saved thousands upon thousands of lives, why would you not want your name associated with it?
[–]Phant0mX 95 points96 points97 points 11 months ago
A recent 20/20 investigation detailed Dr. Heimlich’s attempts to promote the use of his maneuver on near drowning victims and cystic fibrosis patients, which leading medical experts say is either useless or potentially dangerous. Dr. Heimlich has also been criticized for supporting human studies into his theory that malaria can be used to treat AIDS patients. The application of so-called "malariatherapy" has been denounced by leading AIDS researchers as dangerous, scientifically unfounded and unethical.
He didn't sue, they took his name off after this happened.
[–]LnDHaze 215 points216 points217 points 11 months ago
This and to keep your head down when you have a nosebleed kind of go hand in hand. Going up just forces the blood down your throat and you can just start choking on it.
[–]bubbles_says 1257 points1258 points1259 points 11 months ago
When I need to remember something and I dont have a pen and paper handy, I put some item in a place where it doesn't belong. For example, say at night before sleepy time I need to remember to do x tomorrow. I throw a box of tissue on the floor in the middle of the room. Next morning I see the tissue box and wonder what the hell? then I remember oh yeah gotta do x.
[–]Menolith 391 points392 points393 points 11 months ago
"Honey, why are there keys in your slippers?"
"Ohfuck I'm already late!"
storms out of house
It works, yes, but may be a bit confusing for others.

[–]thegimboid 79 points80 points81 points 11 months ago
To add on to that, just because you remember something offhand doesn't mean the other person does. Simply remind them and don't be snippy that they forgot.
(Assuming it's something like "we have plans on Sunday", and not something important like "Don't forget to turn off the stove")
[–]fap_like_a_sir 731 points732 points733 points 11 months ago

I'm so glad my mom taught me this when I was way little. She was a total meth-head, but she was able to teach me some really important life lessons (i.e. don't ever walk up to a car that is asking directions, stay outside the area where the door swings so they can't grab you and pull you in)
[–]nickcash 78 points79 points80 points 11 months ago
Those are some very... specific... lessons there.

Don't burn your bridges. if youre leaving a job, be graceful regardless of how badly you hate it, or it just might bite you in the ass.
[–]SelfHelpForBastards 1346 points1347 points1348 points 11 months ago*
True story. Once came into work and was informed by my boss that I had been downsized. Nothing personal and she hated it but they didn't have enough money in the budget. Instead of freaking out or storming off I asked if I could work the rest of the day to get all my projects to a point that someone else could easily pick them back up. I stayed busy the rest of the day trying to put all of my work affairs in order, even writing a brief 'How to do my job' document for whoever ended up taking over my responsibilities. At the end of the day I found out my boss was so impressed with how I took it that she went to bat for me with her boss and saved my job.
Edit: If you need specifics, they reclassified my job so that my salary would come from a different pool of money.
[–]soggit 434 points435 points436 points 11 months ago
so they did have the money in the budget and you were just being fired?
[–]keepinganeyeonyou 84 points85 points86 points 11 months ago

You can remove Permanent Marker (Sharpie) from a whiteboard by rubbing over it with a Dry Erase marker.
Edit: to everyone saying you can use alcohol or some other solvent, sure... but how often do you have those handy? Who's going to whip out nail polish remover in their conference room? If you have a dry erase board, chances are you have dry erase markers - that's the simple beauty of it.
[–]GODDAMN_IT_SYDNEY 654 points655 points656 points 11 months ago*
You can remove Sharpie from practically any surface by writing over it again in Sharpie and wiping it off before it dries again.
edit: I said 'practically any surface' because this doesn't work with porous surfaces. Walls, wood, clothes, paper, skin...you're out of luck.

On most computers there is a small hole below the disc drive just big enough for the tip of a paperclip to fit in, and that is exactly what goes in there. It releases the discdrive if the computer is off/broken/etc, when I learned this I was amazed.
[–]CptOblivion 357 points358 points359 points 11 months ago*
Unless the drive is one of the non-tray ones that suck the disk in and spit it out. If that's the case, you're pretty much fucked.
...I'm looking at you, Apple.
[edit] yes, I get it people, if the drive motor still works, you can hold down the mouse button during startup. If the motor is broken you can't do that.

You only need a pea sized amount of toothpaste when you brush.
Stop wasting yo tubes.
[–]ItGotRidiculous[S] 655 points656 points657 points 11 months ago
I remember seeing this from a dentist on reddit a while back. Also that the mechanic of brushing was way more important than whatever type of flouride toothpaste you chose.
Meanwhile commercials tell you that their toothpaste is a unique flower and picture it with a heaping gob of toothpaste on the brush.
[–][deleted] 205 points206 points207 points 11 months ago
So you're just going to leave me hanging? The mechanics man, what are they!?
[–]The_Iron_Dentist 91 points92 points93 points 11 months ago
I use an electric brush and definitely recommend them, but they aren't necessary. Always use a soft brush, and the length of time is very important as you want the fluoride to have enough time to work. Brush for 2 minutes, and set a timer if need be. Brush one section of your mouth for 30 seconds and move to the next. Be methodical.
Angle your brush towards the gumline at about 45 degrees and move in small circles, but don't forget the biting surfaces of your teeth, too. The same idea applies to mechanical toothbrushes, they just do most of the work for you. Hope that helps!
[–]Game_of_Karma 415 points416 points417 points 11 months ago
All those toothpaste commercials worked out pretty well for them. People just spamming toothpaste.

When you merge, you need to be going the same speed as traffic. When you get into the acceleration lane, you ACCELERATE. Find a gap, match speed with it, signal, and ease over. If you slow down or brake in the merge lane, you are an asshole, and you're fucking everyone's shit up.
[–]Banshee90 92 points93 points94 points 11 months ago

When you're at a party (this is assuming you have friends and are sociable) and you spill red wine or whatever other beverage on the carpet, do not fret. Quickly grab a glass of warm water and a towel. Pour the water directly on the spill. Next, place the towel onto the spill, DO NOT RUB THE STAIN IN!!! Simply step on the towel and walk back and forth for about 10-15 seconds. The towel will soak up the water and the spilled beverage and there will be virtually no stain left behind.
[–]TheRealmsOfGold 1968 points1969 points1970 points 11 months ago
My mom has a colleague who has only one tablecloth he ever uses for parties. This thing is covered in wine stains. Every time he has a dinner party, right before they begin to eat, he calls for attention, then takes his glass and spills a little wine on the table. "The host has now spilled his wine," he says. "You may now feel free to make a mess without being embarrassed."
I'm totally doing this when I can afford a tablecloth.

[–]ary201 917 points918 points919 points 11 months ago
chop, dice, slice. There are different ways to cut vegetables depending on how you are cooking (or eating).
don't use high heat for everything. cooking something slower can result in better flavors
When draining pasta, don't add oil. The stickiness is your friend when you add sauce.
for that matter, if you are heating up tomato sauce on the stove while boiling pasta, add a half cup of the pasta water to the sauce before you drain.
Seasoning, fat, and acid. That's every salad dressing. like salt & pepper, olive oil, vinegar. or chili powder & salt, lime juice, vegetable oil. or soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, sesame oil
taco seasoning is a sham. Chili powder and cumin. that's what you are tasting.
use butter when frying eggs. it tastes better and olive oil isn't a good substitute.
dry your meat if you want a good browning.
if you are adding fresh herbs to a dish or a soup, add it at the very end. If you are adding a woody herb or a dry herb, add it earlier.
[–]Among_the_fallen 759 points760 points761 points 11 months ago
I'm well in favor of a mandatory cooking class in high school. I've met too many people who don't know how to cook for themselves.
Also.
"I don't cook! Cookings for girls!" == "I'm so manly that I'm dependent on my girlfriend to survive."
[–]allieV 527 points528 points529 points 11 months ago

Don't belittle or ridicule your kids. It can have very negative and lasting effects. Be kind, honest, and respectful, even when they're being idiots or really screw things up. Kids are like employees: if you only ever tell them what they did wrongly they will only worry about staying above that low bar. If you praise them when they do a good job they will be motivated to try and receive that praise in the future.
My four year old recently stood in my living room and started peeing himself because he didn't adequately prioritize going to the bathroom vs playing matchbox cars. He stood there semi crying and said, "Dad, I'm wetting myself, I'm sorry." I forgot my own rule and got angry at him and belittled him, I yelled, I kicked his matchbox garage over, breaking it. I will never forget the look on his face, such pain and sadness, and I was most of the cause for it. When I took him to get a bath I apologized for being so mean and we had a great talk about how I wasn't mad at him, I was mad because the carpet was dirty and I was wrong for taking it out on him. He instantly smiled and told me, "That's ok, dad, we all get angry sometimes, and I should have went potty earlier." Now, when he is playing and goes potty he tells me and I give him a high five, no accidents since.

Except when it's the opposite, which is the most important thing when it comes to propane tanks.
edit, for clarity: The fittings, not the valve itself. And according to others this is true for most flammable gas tanks. I've heard stories of people trying get a fitting to loosen, putting so much pressure on the wrench that it finally busts the cylinder open.

And bike pedals: one is right handed thread, one is left handed thread so that you don't unscrew the pedals while pedaling.

Also, Ctrl + Tab shifts between tabs within an internet window.

At my last job, we had three or four major programs we cycled through constantly during an average work day. Then one day, without warning, our computer people disabled Alt+Tab for "security reasons". Meaning we now had to manually click to minimize and maximize every single window, severely limiting workflow.
I was quoted as having said - "If you don't give us Alt+Tab back, hand to God I'm going to kill somebody".

Learn CPR and basic first aid, you may save someone's life one day. Save 10% of your income for emergencies only, keep it in a savings account. Your health is very important, see your Doctor at least once a year and pay attention.
[–]luckymooner 241 points242 points243 points 11 months ago
If you're going to learn CPR/First-aid know the Good Samaritan laws in your area. Sucks to be human sometimes

That love, lust, and limerence are separate things, and relationships are supposed to be based on love, not limerence or lust.
Limerence is when you feel gaga for someone. It's being "in love" with someone. It's a hormonal effect that comes and goes throughout life. Our culture goes way too far trying to idealize it, but it's not inherently better or more noble than lust, and certainly isn't as noble as love. In fact, most of the time it's like insanity.
Lust is just lust. We all need to get over it. If someone gets horny, it's like they're craving drugs. It's not love, nor is it limerence, but it can happen at the same time as the other two.
Having all three at once does not mean you have perfect love and should be married.
Marriage should be about love and commitment. People shouldn't enter into marriage believing they will feel love, lust, and/or limerence throughout. They will come and go. Love is something you can actually choose to have for someone. You don't have to wait for it like rain.
People need to be taught this stuff very early in life so they don't fuck up their lives with the confusion.
[–]sometimesijustdont 223 points224 points225 points 11 months ago
I had to look up the word Limerence.
[–]GrumpySteen 26 points27 points28 points 11 months ago
Limerence is the word you use to describe the infatuations and crushes of adults who believe "infatuation" and "crush" should only refer to what inexperienced teenagers feel.

That you may never KNOW what it's like to have a certain mental disability, an anxiety, fear or experience. All you have to be aware of is that you don't understand it, no matter how much information you may have.
I had a little moment around 2 years ago when I finally got this. And I guess that in itself isn't something you can particularly describe to someone either. Just try to get it through to them that best way of understanding is to not understand.
So don't judge based on the processes of YOUR mind. It won't be doing anyone justice.
[–]ItGotRidiculous[S] 593 points594 points595 points 11 months ago
Your perception does not equal reality. Heady.
[–]TheLastProphet 354 points355 points356 points 11 months ago
Yeah, this, big time.
It's sort of like there's this general disconnect when it comes to certain mental disorders.
People would never in a million years tell an older person suffering from dementia or Alzheimer's to, "buck up," or, "get over it." Yet they have no problem doing it to younger people with depression or anxiety.

No boner! I'd say a success in all accounts of the matter.

Flexing anything actually. I just grit my teeth and squeeze my hands into fists. It looks like I'm ejaculating but really I'm trying not to.

Never be blatantly mean to a person. You never know what battles they're fighting in life and you don't want to be the straw that broke the camel's back.
[–]jerry_macsquire 1096 points1097 points1098 points 11 months ago
In response to that, never take how others treat you too seriously. If they're going that far out of their way to make you miserable, they're obviously very unhappy with life and you shouldn't let that disrupt your good nature. I can't stand to see a happy person upset/hurt because another unhappy person made them that way.

Faking confidence is just as good as actually having it.
[–]Nutella_the_Hun 1543 points1544 points1545 points 11 months ago
If you feign confidence enough, one day you will examine yourself and realize that you actually aren't faking it anymore and you'll have no idea when the transition occurred.
[–]Dreadgoat 719 points720 points721 points 11 months ago
This applies to any trait. Have a role model, and actually model yourself after that person, whether real or imagined.
You undoubtedly know a person who seems incredibly cool/smart/nice/generous and you are always astounded by them, and respect them immensely for that particular trait or combination.
Want to be like that? Start pretending. Fake it.
You will feel weird at first, and people may even call you out... Ignore all that. Just keep going. Eventually you will realize that not faking it feels weirder than faking it. That's because you aren't faking it anymore. You've become the person you were practicing being! Just like practicing a skill, or training a muscle, you can train and practice your personality.
Highly recommended to anyone with self-esteem issues. If you don't like yourself, then don't "just be yourself." It clearly isn't working for you. Pretend to be someone you would love, endure the shitty period, and before long you will become that person and feel great.
P.S. This seems counter to the old advice "Be yourself!" but it really isn't. Being yourself is important for short term, high pressure events. Being yourself keeps you confident, calm, and in control. Any opportunity you have to not be yourself relatively comfortably should be taken advantage of!

This is so true. I have always been shy and some what introverted. But two years ago my roommate moved out and I was forced to be some what sociable. I figured out that if you faked confidence no body could tell the difference. Now i just feel confident I don't even have to think about it.

In all honesty, there are a surprising number of people who don't know how to do these things, especially in poorly-developed countries. I remember reading an article about a girl getting pregnant because her boyfriend didn't wear a condom, because he didn't know how to put it on, and was afraid it would get stuck inside her

[–]BobTheSCV 115 points116 points117 points 11 months ago
People of the past were not entirely unlike people in the present. Some were smart, as smart as smart people now; some were stupid, as stupid as stupid people now.
This also means that the wisdom of the past can be wrong. Just because someone in the past made a profound-sounding statement doesn't make it inherently true.

The difference between claim, argument and example.
Disagreement with your argument does not mean disagreement with your claim/opinion. Examples do not prove your claim, they are supposed to help with the understanding. Likewise, disproving my example does not disable my argument.
Edit: prove/proof

Due in 6 months. It's worth it though, right? LIE TO ME! LIE TO ME AND TELL ME IT"S WORTH IT!!!
[–]muchonada 791 points792 points793 points 11 months ago*
I won't lie to you. It is worth it. The loss of sleep, the annoying Why Why Why, the brattiness, the disobedience, the tantrums, the drawing on couches, the hitting their siblings, the having to discipline them, realising that you fail in so many ways and that they are copying your failures, having your heart ripped out watching your little one cry as you leave for work, etc
Despite all those and the many more difficulties, it's worth it.
For the squeals of delight as you spin them around, watching them figure out how to pull those two lego blocks apart for the first time, snuggling with them reading bedtime stories, watching them run off to play at the playground with kids they've never met before, seeing them write out the entire alphabet on their own, their delight in playing with their puppy, watching them climb the stairs for the first time, winning a "first place" ribbon for horse back riding - even though they were the only one in their age group (she's 4, got it yesterday), getting teary-eyed sitting at your desk thinking of all the way you're proud and delighted with your kids, seeing them take care of their younger siblings, sharing their special blanket with their sibling when the latter gets hurt - just cause it'll make them feel better, coming home from work and seeing them run to the door with smiles from ear to ear because you're home, etc.
MORBIDBUDDYSECRETION is right, it is one of the hardest things you'll ever do. But here's my addition to this thread, one which most so many people these days don't seem to understand.
Everyone says that raising kids is one of the things that'll bring you the most pride and joy in life. That doesn't prepare you for the fact that raising kids is one of the things that'll bring you the most pride and joy in life.
[–]Lord_Migit 271 points272 points273 points 11 months ago
I find people concentrate too much on how hard it will be rather than how important it is. It should never be about you it should always be about the child. Remember the child did not choose to be born to you, so your aim should be to make it glad it was.
Good luck. And read lots of books!

Rolex watches dont tick nor does the second hand stop, it moves in one continuous circle. So if someone wants to sell you their Rolex hold it up to you ear. Do you hear nothing or a faint wurrrr (if you have superman like ears)? Is the second hand moving smoothly not stopping at any time? You might have a real Rolex in your hands.

Everyone should know what its like in the customer service industry, and what its like to sit and get yelled at all day, they should have to experience it before they start dishing it out
[–]ASOS_addict 226 points227 points228 points 11 months ago
I agree with you entirely but as someone who worked in the services industry for a good six years since age 14 I get very frustrated at people who work in the industry and are just blatantly rude and don't actually do what they are being paid for. By the same token I don't take my frustrations out on people unless they really deserve it! Like trying to return a faulty product unused 36 hours after purchase, don't take it offensively it's not like you made the damn thing!

Used to sell phones. Had a dude simply ask how much it would cost to add an unlimited line on his account. Let me be clear, no money had changed hands at this point. He just asked. I showed him the pricing structure and explained how much it would be. He got really angry and yelled "You're ripping us off!" He spun around and stormed out, knocking over a stool on his way. It was especially crazy because, as I said, no rip off had or could occur. Literally, all I did was explain to him the price of this completely hypothetical transaction should he choose to engage in it.
The store was full of people, and everyone kind of froze until the guy behind him, a hippie looking dude with long hair, a beard, and sandals, says "Wow, that guy was a pretty big butthole."
The other customers all laughed and the mood of the store went back to being cheery.
