I once met a famous Romanian lyrics writer. He told me he suspects the title of the song was initially supposed to be "Dragostea dintai" ("First love") but that didn't have a smooth sound to it, so they changed a letter. "Dragostea din tei" makes little sense, but sounds better to the ear.
And the resulting weirdness of it is a welcome plus.

It was a protest song in reaction to Reagan (NATO) putting new mid-range nuclear missiles in Europe. This move was widely protested at the time, as It was seen by some as needless provocation of a dying USSR. If I recall correctly, the other side seemed to believe that it would help to destabilize the USSR by accelerating Soviet military spending in response to NATO. Either way, it signaled an end to detente.
Of course, all of this was against the backdrop of the strategic arms limitations that Reagan also pushed, so I could it could kind of seem a wash.

I am imagining it somewhat difficult to understand with the multiple meanings that are used, as "du hast" can mean "you have" (as in owning something) or "you have" (past tense; you have asked). It also sounds exactly like "du hasst" (meaning "you hate"). So there are actually 3 interpretations for the title alone. That's why I like Rammstein a lot. And that's why their songs don't work as well in English.

The thing with Rammstein songs is that the lyrics are very unusual and (in my opinion) actually worth looking up.

I'm not sure how I discovered it, but there's this song called "Les Sucettes" by France Gall. It's a catchy, sticky-sweet French pop song from the 60's. The kind where you know it's shit, but you can't stop singing it, like "Call Me Maybe."
I decided to look up the words, and it turns out that what I thought was just an innocent French pop song is about blowjobs.
Literally the whole song is about sucking cock. Even the title, "Les Sucettes" means "Lollipops."
