Maybe not a misconception, but the thought that everybody is out to hurt your child. I shouldn't get cops called on me for waving to a child to make him/her smile.

Exactly. Around 115 U.S. children are abducted every year. That is about one in a million. A one in a million occurrence is not worth harassing strangers over or preventing your kids from playing outside over either.

Just because some phenomenon is being reported in the media a lot recently, doesn't mean that it's a trend, that it's suddenly happening more than it used to, or that it's more important than previously.

Best example == Summer of the Shark

That being bipolar automatically means you're absolutely crazy, "just" moody, or that it is something easily suppressed. Earlier in a thread today someone posted about a terrible family member and casually attributed their behavior to being bipolar "or something." I just wish people would stop blaming shitty behavior on our already shitty disorder, we don't need the extra societal judgment. :\ edit: damn parallel sentence structure...

Some quiet people don't want to be "socialized". Some of us like to be alone and peaceful sometimes. Partying isn't for everybody, and you shouldn't force everybody to be "normal".

I find people think it is just weird to want to be alone. Even if it's for 10mins, this is even more the case with my flat mates girlfriends, they just don't understand the concept that you don't always have to be entertaining someone else. If there is going to be silence, I'd rathe be silent alone.

Maybe they are just too clingy.

I know that feel. I share a dorm with 3 other guys at my college. Sometimes, I just want to go into my room and be alone. I love my roommates and love hanging out with people. I just need to be with my thoughts, aimlessly browse the internet, and not be judged when I scratch myself. Nothing against anyone.

Showing up to your house in the middle of the night after you've politely refused is just disrespectful. And I totally get where you're coming from with having a friend who's extremely social, I had one until I just stopped answering his calls. The bottom line is, if you don't enjoy their company (and honestly the D&D game sounds like the worst kind of game) and they won't respect your occasional need for solitude then you need to drop them. The fact that they aren't respecting your boundaries makes me suspect that they aren't truly your friends but they get something out of having you along. Maybe they're the kind of people who feel they get an enhanced image by having so many people around them. Maybe they perceive your unwillingness to hang out constantly as an attack on them or they wonder what they did to piss you off. Maybe they can't understand your situation or are concerned. And because you've always gone along with their plans and have only started to stick up for yourself, they may see it as a sign that something is wrong which is a good thing. It means they care about you. They may not express it in the best way (like showing up to your house) but if they care about you then they should listen to you. If you've explained how you feel and they still won't listen, I would stop hanging out with them all together. My current best friend understands that sometimes I go into hermit mode, set my phone on silent and do my own thing for a while. He knows it has nothing to do with him and if there is an emergency he really needs to talk to someone about, he just has to text me or message me through facebook and I'll call him but the bottom line is he never does this unless it really is an emergency. He respects my boundaries and that's friendship is. Respect, a quality I don't see much of your friends having for you based on your post.

Yes. Introverts are normal, a bit misunderstood i guess, but everyone should just accept the fact that not all people have the constant urge to tell everybody else what's on our mind.

[–]Fanzellino 51 points52 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really that's it. I'm also an introvert, so I spend tons of time alone in my room and that makes me happy. Maintaining a healthy romantic relationship and making a human child not die and not have ridiculous neglect issues (which I am also completely inequipped to handle) would just be too much. Now, if I could find someone who just is head over heels for kids, and he could be the main parent, and spend all his time with the kids while I hung out alone and we got down to it every once in a while, I could do that. I'd be an awesome backup parent, and if there was a kid to distract my husband from me, things would all be peachy keen.

I think it comes from the idea/fact that every ancestor you have has passed on their genetic information, continued the line, for millions/billions of years, and suddenly you are the one that chooses to stop.

[–]wtfapkin 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can identify with that. I always felt broken because I didn't want to be super social and go out and attend parties, etc, or that when I did I quickly got my fill. Best description of extrovert vs introvert that I've heard is that extroverts feed energy from social situations while introverts have that energy drained by the same. I can enjoy some event or function just as much as an extrovert and be ready to go home and be alone afterwards instead of wanting the party to go on forever.

Men: I do not want to fuck every man that I see. Do you want to fuck every girl that you see? Some of you are just plain ugly, and anyone who thinks I want to do them just because I'm gay is immediately ugly in my eyes.

Women: I am not an accessory. I'm not something that every teenage girl simply must have. I am more than just a gay guy, dammit! Tell me, would you tell a new friend of yours "Yay! Now I have a black friend!" NO!

My big one currently, is that I wish the general public in the UK would think twice about being condescending to Fast Food workers, such as Pizza delivery guys (Yeah I'm biased). Personally, I have a good degree, and am fully qualified in digital forensics, but my area is so niche, there is no jobs. I'm working alongside a chartered accountant, 2 nurses, a Lawyer, a high court lawyer, an architect and many more.. Everyone has their own story like filling time between emigrating to another country, saving for a while to go travelling, hard times, whatever.

THIS. Bisexual means that yeah, you like this gender, you may like it more! BUT YOU LIKE THIS ONE TOO. Hell, everybody if you really think about it is, at least to some tiny degree, bisexual. Or has been, once.

Men, there'll always be that one guy you look at, and go "... if I was a woman." and ladies, there'll always be that woman that you go "YES. I would be all over that!" Bisexuality exists, and claiming it doesn't is just denial.

That my gender determines whether or not I'll be good in combat. I've seen great soldiers that were male and others that were female, and there are plenty people of both gender who shouldn't even be in uniform.

I get that there are physical differences; I don't think we should pretend otherwise. I'm scrawny, but I'm perfectly capable of doing my job. Yes, I can fireman carry your 220lb+ ass when we're both in full gear. (Sucks ball, but I've done it.) I'm proficient in multiple weapon systems and have excelled in all of my training. I remain calm under pressure and am a good team member.

I'm also not sure I buy into the whole "but a guy would save a girl first" argument. I've been in situations where our convoy was attacked and everyone acted as a soldier. We all made sure everyone was ok, but females weren't getting extra attention.

I wish we could judge each other based on skill sets.

[–]Desinis 60 points61 points ago

That's what irks me the most about the gay marriage controversy. They need to choose whether it's a religious thing or a legal thing, but separation of church and state makes them not compliant together.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I really don't see why there is any controversy, I very much agree with "to each their own" with the added exception "provided your own doesn't impede on someone else's right to do what they like".

A gay couple marrying impedes on nobody while legally restricting who can marry is clearly impeding on how some people live their life.

If religious people want to live their own life by their personal beliefs, that's fine, but I will not tolerate people who actively support their beliefs being legally imposed on everyone else.

But doesn't it affect your non-religious taxes and stuff though?

[–]sylinmino 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Indeed it's not--it is a legal institution, though. The whole concept of "tied-together" marriage and of "living together forever" spawned from legal documents saying that these two will stick together and make babies together. That's all that marriage is. But although different religions try to impose certain regulations on it, it is not, at its base, a religious institution.

I can't tell you how many times I have had to listen to black people say somethin like "that cracka crazy" or "white boy over there said blah blah blah" ... it is equally racist when a black person says it. Now, because I am white, if I make any indication whatsoever that I am aware of an individual's color that is racist, but they can talk/act racist all day long towards white people and no one says a word...

That just because a dog is big, black, or Pitbull-ish doesn't mean it's going to maul you or is a threat to you, your children or your neighborhood.

There is an elderly lady who has a Rottie that goes to the same dog park as me. The surprisingly frequent amount of verbal abuse she gets from random strangers for having such a "dangerous beast" (he is one of the most gentle and well behaved dogs I have ever met) makes my blood boil.

[–][deleted] 47 points48 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm wary of other people's dogs and warier still if they're large dogs. I have no way of telling, at a glance, how that dog has been raised. I'm just being cautious, that's all.

verbally abusing someone you don't know for having a stereo-typically "bad dog" is fucking retarded, though.

[–]OneUglyDogAndMe 30 points31 points ago

Speaking as an owner of a big, ugy, black, pitbull-type dog - thank you.

When I first met my pup, he was about to be put down by the shelter - because no one wanted a (potentially) big, black pit-type dog, and his time was up. I'd always been one of those folks who said there was no way in hell they'd ever own a pit bull. But I felt sorry for the ugly mutt and decided to foster him until the local rescue could find a home.

Two years later, and the dude I swore was only coming for a brief stay is now firmly a member of the family. I've learned more about dogs, pit-type breeds, and critter behaviors than I ever guessed I didn't know. He turned everything I thought I understood about pit bulls on its head. Never would have guessed that the ugly dog no one wanted would turn out to be so sweet, so loving, so people-oriented, smart, and obedient.

It breaks my heart to have people glare at my sweet, dopey dog and mutter things like "vicious" or "dangerous."

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

Your post suddenly made me sad :( we had a pitbull/border collie cross named Max. He was a rescue dog as well - he ran straight onto our property one day, got his (trailing) chain tangled in our fence, and we took him in to the SPCA. He didn't get claimed, so we went back and got him... About a week or so later, the original owner showed up asking for his dog back. We told him that if he wanted to do that, we'd like the money back for getting him vaccinated, registered, and de-sexed (required for adopting him). The guy looked pissed, but told us we could keep him, then.

He lasted with us for what must've been over a decade, but finally succumbed to his old age a few months back... but he, too, was a gentle, sweet dog. He was scared of sheep and thunderstorms, and our cats... Never vicious. So it makes me mad, too, when I hear about these people saying all pitbulls are evil.

Good for you! Pit bulls are clowns and live to please. I've been around pits my entire life. Them and American Bulldogs are my favorite breeds.

[–]VividLotus 62 points63 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Absolutely. This misconception goes the other way too-- people assume that because a dog is tiny that it must be friendly and that it's fine to let their toddler run up and grab it.

A dog's behavior depends so much on how it is trained and how it's treated by people. There are people who purchase a pit bull and abuse it and try to train it to be aggressive, and there are people who adopt a pit bull and carefully train it and treat it lovingly. There are people with small dogs who completely fail to train them at all and neglect them because they see the dog as a fashion accessory rather than a pet who needs love and care; and then of course there are people who train their small dogs well and care for them properly. The dogs in those different categories may have very different behavior...and it's because of the people, not the dogs.

[–]meevie 78 points79 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I volunteer at an animal shelter and have spent a lot of time around dogs. Of all the true "red-zone" dogs that I see, most of them are the little guys. People, environments and experiences make "bad" dogs - not breeds.

That elderly lady I mentioned in my post? I ran in to her the other day at the dog park... We're standing around chatting while our dogs played together (her 100lb Rottie with my 20lb Pug, off leash). This other woman comes by with a little Yorkie-Chiuaua looking thing (on a leash). This little guy SEES our dogs and loses his shit. He starts snarling, yipping, pulling against her, and basically trying to attack our dogs from across the park.

She picks up her dog (who is still trying to leap out of her arms and attack our dogs), comes all the way over to us and then YELLS at us for having this "dangerous" dog there without a leash/muzzle because it'll kill the helpless small dogs. Meanwhile, both the Rottie and my little tiny Pug have sat down side by side and are just watching the scene calmly.

ب_ب

I used to have a 90lb Black Lab/Chow mix. Friendliest dog in the world. And yeah, he could get aggressive if there were other dogs. He'd growl, he'd posture, but that's because he was the alpha out of the dogs we had, and he calmed right down once I had his attention. Hell, he'd be totally cool with the other dog once he saw I was cool with 'em, too.

People were scared to death that he would try to kill their dogs over what's normal social behavior between dogs that never led anywhere violent.

Just because they don't speak perfect English and they live in the USA doesn't mean you're better than them. Something (at the age of 19) I realized. I go to a university that has a huge international program. It was not until last month that I actually had a conversation with someone I thought was of "lesser intelligence" just because they didn't know perfect English (this specific person is from China). It was mind-blowing. I had never had a thing against anyone of different skin color than I. Never had I called someone who spoke English well a derogatory name. I realized I only used racial slurs when it came down to knowing English well enough or not. All I can say is university/college has changed me in many ways: education, friends, socially, but this has to be one of the greatest things.
