What is the most depressing fact you know of? (self.AskReddit)

During famines in North Korea, starving Koreans would dig up dead bodies and eat them.
Edit: Supposedly...

A woman born in South Africa has a better chance of being raped than learning to read.
[–]funfungiguy[] 43 points44 points45 points 12 months ago
They've developed an anti-rape device called the Rape-aXe condom which is a latex sheathe with inward facing barbs. If a man rapes a woman, the sheathe bites into his dick and he has to have it surgically removed.
Critics thought it was barbaric and disgusting and they've had a hard time getting it introduced at drug stores.

During the battle of Leningrad, the Russians had teams of policemen that were specifically tasked with preventing cannibalism because it became rampant and was bad for morale.
People calling for source:
Reports of cannibalism appeared in the winter of 1941–1942, after all birds, rats, and pets had been eaten by survivors.[48] Hungry gangs attacked and ate defenceless people.[49] Leningrad police even formed a special unit to combat cannibalism.[50]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Leningrad#Effect_on_the_city
The Siege lasted three years, and as many as 4.5 million people may have died.
For example, from November 1941 – February 1942 the only food available to the citizen was 125 grams of bread, of which 50–60% consisted of sawdust and other inedible admixtures, and distributed through ration cards. In January–February 1942, about 700–1,000[citation needed] citizens died every day, most of them from hunger. People often died on the streets, and citizens soon became accustomed to the sight of death.

Less depressing fact: At the time of WWII, one of the largest agricultural gene banks in the world was located in Leningrad. It stored a collection of delicious seeds and tubers. (The potato is a type of tuber.) During the siege, the scientists guarding the site refused to eat any of the collection and twelve of them starved to death. The gene bank survived the war and today 90% of its collection is found no where else in the world.

[–]strolls 438 points439 points440 points 1 year ago
More depressing fact: today the collection is at risk of destruction, due to inadequate funding and a property developer's plan to build flats (or is it holiday cottages?) on the site.
[–]Asynonymous 56 points57 points58 points 1 year ago
Can't it be moved? I know there's seed banks all over the world, surely one of them would buy the collection.

The fact that some children are abused/neglected/in need, then die as children, having never known anything but misery their whole lives.
[–]CloudDrone 21 points22 points23 points 1 year ago
Its also depressing when the children don't know that they only know misery. When they don't know their sad, but everyone who's older knows it and can't bear to tell them.
[–]SherVal 1221 points1222 points1223 points 1 year ago
That the older I get, the faster time seems to pass. Slow down!!!
[–]Mugiwara04 325 points326 points327 points 1 year ago
I read somewhere that, subjectively, we've lived about half our life by age 20, in terms of how we perceive time passing.
Obviously not true for everyone, but for those of us who go to work we don't love until retirement (if we get to retire) I think it has to do with all the hours spent doing shit we don't care about.
[–]salemfalls 498 points499 points500 points 1 year ago
Being 22 this made me feel physically sick
[–]Njvved 309 points310 points311 points 1 year ago
A common symptom of depression is something called "depressive realism". It means what it sounds like; a lot of depressed people are more accurate in their understanding of themselves and the world around them, while most of us run around thinking that we're destined to win the lotto. When you are your most down on yourself, you are probably right!

Rape of Nanking
[–]glaneuse 62 points63 points64 points 1 year ago
What's more depressing is the army's solution to that incident: Comfort Women. "Ugh, I guess all this public raping is bad for PR. Let's just kidnap a bunch of local women and sexually enslave them inside fake brothels for the duration of the war."
Japan has yet to apologize for that, so if you feel like sending a frosty letter, former 'comfort women' in need of apologies would thank you for it.
[–]Riley_The_Thief 114 points115 points116 points 1 year ago
And the fact that half of the Japanese government denies this ever happening, and don't even talk about it in Japanese schools.
[–]fatfook 215 points216 points217 points 1 year ago
Also during WWII, as the Americans marched across the Pacific, hundreds of Islanders killed themselves when the troops landed because they had been brainwashed by the Japanese that they would be tortured and used as sex slaves by the Americans. Many also grabbed their children as they jumped off of cliffs to avoid an encounter with troops who in reality only wanted to help them.

That my motherland, Iraq, is pretty much fucked now.
If at all, maybe in some chance, a member of Al-Qaida goes on Reddit, and is browsing this post right now, i want you to know, that someday, and i will make sure of this, that a giant fucking dildo crashes into your house and goes straight back in your mouth.
[–]Magpie32 561 points562 points563 points 1 year ago
I don't know if this will help things, or make it worse, or piss you off, or whatever, but I wanted to say something.
I served in a transportation company in Iraq for 16 months. I got to see the whole country, top to bottom. I thought it was beautiful. Amazing and varied, and just beautiful. I met a lot of really awesome people while I was there. I did my best to make sure that I took care of the country while I was there: I didn't litter, didn't let my soldiers litter, cleaned up any garbage or damage we found, protected historical areas from some of the bigger idiots the US sent over. We worked with the communities to help them make there home better. We listened to what they wanted, and then tried to implement those changes.
I tend to be painfully optimistic. I still have the hope that someday I can take my grandkids back there and show them around, the way WWII vets did in Europe. It might never happen, but I saw too much good in that country to give up on that dream yet. If I see any way that I can help the nation of Iraq, I will.
I am so sorry for what has happend to your motherland. I am sorry for any part I played in it's destruction, and please know that I did my best to limit that as much as possible. This isn't some weird guilt thing. I am proud of my service, and I did what was necessary to accomplish my mission. I am just aware that war destroys, and both sides need to accept responsibility for that.
[–]Hameedo 148 points149 points150 points 1 year ago
Didn't piss me off :P Thank you for doing what you mentioned. It wasn't your choice and it was your job. I'm not gonna say shit like "OH WHY'D YOU SHOOT BLAH BLAH BLAH" No... You did what you had to do to defend yourself and i respect that. I hope for that too.. We have a couple apartments that we still own back Baghdad. And someday, i'd like to go back and live in one of them and try to remember my childhood. Don't be sorry, and you should be proud. I don't wanna sound like some pissed off Iraqi guy hahaha. I look at videos of soldiers coming back from Iraq or Afghanistan and i can't help but tear up a bit. I feel proud for everyone who came back safely to their family.
I'm sorry about my shitty grammar, spelling, etc. I've been awake for about 20 hours now hahahah

[–]klethra 49 points50 points51 points 1 year ago
I've got a deal for you: describe your life in five hundred words or less, and I'll think about you for a while. I'll even tell your story to a friend. In return, I want to be a plot device in your story where you think about the fact that hundreds of heroes in their own stories could never have pushed on to their happily ever after without your help.
Do something heroic today.

For the next 50-60 years, if I don't die from a heart attack, stress, or a car accident (and barring unemployment) I will most probably go to work from Monday to Friday, sit at a desk all day doing stuff I'd probably rather not be doing.
Each day, I will commute between 1 and 2 hours, sitting in a train, tube, or car with people I'd rather not surround myself with, just so I can be with the people I love for a few hours each evening and weekends.
I'm sorry it's not North Korea, but damn it's a depressing thought.
Edit: A lot of interesting comments. I should point out I'm mid 20's and living in UK. Our retirement age (officially) is 68 so I used that. I have a specialist BA/MA + 5 years of internships and 3 years work experience in my field. It's not that I don't enjoy my work (because I do) I just feel I'm not cut out to sit in an office all day. I'd love to work with my hands but learning a trade and then becoming a tradesman would mean a few years where my budding family would suffer.
Double Edit: As pointed out retirement age increases as life expectancy goes up. Only in France does it go the other way around. I will consider myself lucky if I manage to retire at all before I pop my metaphorical clogs.
[–]qwertyasdfg123456 724 points725 points726 points 1 year ago*
Being in high school, here's how I see my life: 3 years of being an unconscious toddler, 19 years of schooling where I am educated for a career, 40-50 years of a career I will most likely hate, and 10-20 years of retirement. That's it. 10-20 years to finally do what I've always wanted. By then, I will be in such poor shape that I won't be able to even do half of them or have the time/money. I will have wasted my life. Yet I continue down this path, because in our society, it is all we can really do.
EDIT: Everyone calm the fuck down.

I hate when people say that post-traumatic stress disorder isn't a real thing. It's gone by different names for over a century. Shell shock, combat fatigue, combat stress reaction, etc. It's a real thing, and it's killing more soldiers than war.
[–]mountainwampus 1772 points1773 points1774 points 1 year ago
George Carlin's take:
"There's a condition in combat. Most people know about it. It's when a fighting person's nervous system has been stressed to it's absolute peak and maximum, can't take any more input. The nervous system has either snapped or is about to snap. In the first world war that condition was called shell shock. Simple, honest, direct language. Two syllables. Shell shock. Almost sounds like the guns themselves. That was 70 years ago. Then a whole generation went by. And the second world war came along and the very same combat condition was called battle fatigue. Four syllables now. Takes a little longer to say. Doesn't seem to be as hard to say. Fatigue is a nicer word than shock. Shellshock...battle fatigue. Then we had the war in Korea in 1950. Madison Avenue was riding high by that time. And the very same combat condition was called Operational Exhaustion. Hey we're upto 8 syllables now! And the humanity has been squeezed completely out of the phrase now. It's totally sterile now. Operational Exhaustion: sounds like something that might happen to your car. Then of course came the war in Vietnam, which has only been over for about 16 or 17 years. And thanks to the lies and deceit surrounding that war, I guess it's no surprise that the very same condition was called Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Still 8 syllables, but we've added a hyphen. And the pain is completely buried under jargon. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. I bet you, if we'd still been calling it shell shock, some of those Vietnam veterans might have gotten the attention they needed at the time. I bet you that."

This statistic is misleading. The rates of deaths from both combat and suicide have been sharply dropping since the end of the Viet Nam War. It's just that combat deaths have dropped much faster. This makes sense from a logistical standpoint because it's relatively easy to give people the training to survive combat. It's difficult to diagnose and treat the myriad of mental illnesses like ptsd and depression that can lead to suicide because they have complex and widely varying sets of causes and symptoms.

Canadian Geese mate for life and become mournfully heartbroken when a mate dies.
"There have been reports of pair bonds that are so strong that if one goose is shot down by a hunter, the partner will circle back. Drawn by its need to stay with its lifelong companion, the single goose will often ignore the sound of shooting and return to die with its mate."
"Widowed geese have been observed circling around and around, crying in heartrending sorrowful tones when their partners die or are murdered by hunters."

In the aftermath of 9/11, search and rescue dogs were used to try and find survivors trapped in the rubble, but after the first day (ish) no more survivors were found (at least none who could be extracted). The dogs then started getting very depressed, because they were working so hard and weren't able to help, so they started shedding, or refusing to eat. Rescue workers, in order to maintain morale, staged rescue scenarios by lying in the rubble, pretending to be victims.
And most of these dogs are dead now.

It'd be cool as hell to explore the galaxy/universe, but we have a lot of cool awesome stuff within our grasp.

About 7,000 years ago, there lived a people on the steppes northeast of the Black Sea and northwest of the Caspian Sea (roughly modern day Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan). We don't know much about them, except that they were basically regular people. They had domesticated animals (horses, dogs and cattle), they knew how to grow crops (they had plows), and they had invented the solid wheel.
They left behind no great monuments, no great thinkers, no wonderful mythological texts (writing wouldn't be invented for another 2,000 years). They were just people, regular people like everyone else living the world. Nothing extraordinary about them, nothing to set them apart from anyone else, or give any reason why they should be remembered at all.
Except one thing: they spoke a language. When they moved, their language moved with them. When they migrated and integrated with other people, they spread their language. Everywhere they went, their language followed with them, constantly changing into new languages, but spreading all the same.
Some of them migrated west, to the Mediterranean, where their language became Greek. Some moved further west, where their language became the basis for the Italic languages, producing Latin, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French.
Some moved to the north, as far as northern Germany, Denmark and Sweden, where the language transformed into what we today call Proto-Germanic. Proto-Germanic is the basis for all Germanic languages, including German, English, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, etc.
Some of them moved South, towards modern day Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, and they spread their language there, too. Eventually, it would transform into Urdu, Pashtu, Hindi, Persian, Bengali, Punjabi, and many more (over a billion people speak one of these languages).
Today, descendants of this language (which we refer to as Proto-Indo-European, and the descendants as the Indo-European languages) are all over the world: virtually everyone in both North and South America, Western Europe and a huge chunk of central Asia all speak at least one Indo-European language. Add to that all the people who speak English as a second language, or all the people living in Africa who speak versions of these languages (French, for instance).
But it all started with one people, speaking one language, on the north shore of the Black Sea, who left nothing behind except a language which would change the world.
(note: so, I was getting really bummed out by everyone here, so I thought I'd share this, which hopefully would raise some spirits and counteract some of the depressing things. More information about the Proto-Indo-Europeans can be found on wikipedia. Also, we're not actually sure when or where they lived, but that up there is the most widely accepted hypothesis)
EDIT: just to be clear, this was not the first language, language itself is much older. But this particular language happened to spread all over the world.

I agree with you there. I'm not scared of death. If it came to me today I would embrace it. I am actually scared of the people I will leave behind and the effect my death would have on the people I love and care about. When you see couples who have died together, sure it is a horrific tragedy but you can also see it from the point that one won't have to go through the crippling loss that comes with losing your partner

[–][deleted] 302 points303 points304 points 1 year ago
In no more than 101050 units of time from now (year, second - the number is too big for it to matter), in the universe dominated only by photons after the last black holes have evaporated, there will be a spontaneous entropy decrease resulting in the appearance of a Boltzmann brain in the vacuum. A Boltzmann brain is a self-aware entity which arises out of chaotic fluctuations in a system. And, in 101056 units of time, quantum fluctuations in the same dead universe will generate a new Big Bang.
What depresses me instead is that in 10101076 units of time, history will repeat itself arbitrarily. Every possible event will have happened. It's scary to think that there is a finite number of possible things that could ever happen, and that eventually that number will be reached.
[–]Emphursis 201 points202 points203 points 1 year ago*
I wonder, are we the first iteration? Are we somewhere in the middle? Or are we repeating ourselves, perhaps for the hundredth time?
EDIT: Now my brain has stopped hurting thinking about this, if this is actually the case, could it be where deja-vu comes from?
[–]ersatztruth 134 points135 points136 points 1 year ago*
Unfortunately, there is no evidence or reason to believe that there is any such phenomenon beyond: "hey, the universe had to have come from somewhere."
That said, the thought experiment is a somewhat trippy evolution of the 'brain-in-a-vat' paradox:
Consider that all matter evolved from random interactions between elementary particles which formed subatomic particles, which formed atoms, which formed compounds, which formed all matter currently existing in the universe.
Random interactions are unlikely to create an ordered system.
The more complex an ordered system is, the more improbable it is for it to arise from random interactions.
A single mind hallucinating an entire universe is infinitely less complex than an actual entire universe.
Being a mind experiencing an entire universe, it is infinitely more probable that you are simply a collection of random energy hallucinating than that the universe you are experiencing actually exists.
The problem is that this thought experiment demands an infinite and random universe, whereas everything we know about the universe indicates that it is very finite and very (though not fundamentally) deterministic.
Edit: Unless, of course, that is just part of the hallucination, in which case wfawbvher aosdijfhjk huikhtrbr lsdkfjasl kdfjwlefoic!?
Everything we can see and measure suggests that we live in a space-time transitioning from a point of infinite chaos in zero volume to one of zero chaos in infinite volume. Perhaps there are other space-times than our own, but as part of our space-time we are no more able to leave ours than you are of walking away from yourself.
