I don't think the point of The South Butt was to take The North Face's brilliant "logo" or "design" and use it to get "big". I think it was initially created to make fun of the northface which had an absurd rise in popularity amongst young people in recent years. To me it's an artful "fuck you" overpriced clothing labels in general. I don't think it was ever supposed to fool anyone for the real thing, I think the Kroger brand oreos are more of a "cowardly act" than the South butt by your definition. What is so sacred about the North Face that it can never be submitted to mockery? To me the Southbutt is just that, a mockery of the North Face, the one thing over esthetic or functionality that The North Face products themselves can't ever provide. In that sense, the two products are completely different, The Northface catering to one subculture and The southbutt catering to the antithesis of that.
