IMO no matter how much you psych up, when the sprint starts and when the lactic acid with all the pain kicks in, you forget all the "psychement" and just concentrate on pushing it to the end.

Did my 3rd 2k this season this morning, started out the day on 7:05, finished the test on 6:54! Finally got a sub-7! :D

Feels so good, doesn't it? Congrats on the sub-7! I just did it on Saturday for the first time, so I know how you feel.

My personal fav is to listen to some eminem to psyc up before hand then tinie tempah during, but anything with a fast pass to get your adrenalin pumping!

Oh yeah, and I listen to Pendulum beforehand, preferably their Immersion album, like Witchcraft, The Vulture, The Fountain and The Island (Parts 1 and/or 2). And for the actual test, I plan it like a race. Start, out for 20, lengthen for 10, hard for 10, and then find my rhythm. At the 500, go out for another 10, 750 go for 5, at the 1000 go for 10 again, and then at the 1250 go for another 5. At the 650 build it up with a 10-5-10 and sprint from there. (Of course I rate lower than in a race, but I still follow the typical race plan).

I don't think power tens are good to do in a 2k erg test it takes to much out of you and it messes up your rhythm. but they are great in a boat.

To each their own I find, personally I like the power 10s in a 2k just because it relieves the monotony of seeing numbers going down on the screen, allowing for me to know where and when to push while telling my body to keep going.

Ehh again to each his own, but I think you'll find that as you progress through your years of training you'll realize this is a bad idea. As a lightweight, I am going 99.9% to pull 1:35s and I need to be damn on exact with every stroke at that pace; if I vary plus or minus 2 seconds I can say goodbye to a good time. The worst thing I could imagine would be to do ten hard ones at 1:32 or something. Additionally, if you ever watch an erg test of an elite rower, they pick a split and hit it until bringing it up a bit until the sprint. A 2k becomes a game a toeing that line right before your muscles give out for 6 minutes straight; any deviation will mess up that rhythm.

If you have the ability to take 2-3 tens throughout your 2k at splits that are near 5 seconds faster, you aren't pulling hard enough throughout the piece.

I'm going to avoid taking any possible offense here because it is only implied. If you see me do an erg, you know that I'm pulling hard enough at every stroke. My mind just requires goals every step of the way otherwise the numbers on the screen beat me. My power-10s may not accomplish much on the screen, but in my mind they mean a lot. The last one means I'm about to sprint for the end. The first one means that I've already gone about 500m, 25% done.

As for the elite rowers, they can do as they like, but I personally cannot simply hold a desired split. I know that I will lose a bit of power in the 1200-1500 region, so I need motivation and a bit of leeway to fall into just in case I start going over 1:45.

No offense meant, to each his own of course.

I get so hyped up on adrenaline that I don't hurt during the test, its what comes afterwards that nearly kills me. Remember the Name is a great song. I also like Weezer's I Am The Greatest Man That Ever Lived. That song gets me so pumped up!
