According to ARS transcriber;

Can send texts via iMessage to people's "legacy chat services" (SMS) or people's Apple IDs, phone numbers, etc.by Jacqui.

Not sure if that means from Mac to SMS message, I mean, you can already do it on iPhone, why would they mention the same feature again? EDIT: Just watched the keynote. By legacy they mean GTalk, Yahoo and AIM. So no SMS.

I have one problem with this. When I set up my apple ID, it was using a gmail address. That was 4 years ago. I use my iCloud for email exclusively now, but I'm forever tethered to that gmail address as it is my apple ID. I so badly want to delete that gmail account, but I have hundreds of dollars worth of purchases, and no way to migrate it to my .me address. Now that ID is going to be concreted to my phone number now. Just let me migrate completely, Apple!

[–]stopkeepingscore 37 points38 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can change your apple id to any email. I had to migrate when I left college and no longer had a college email. I didn't lose any purchases or anything like that.

[–]sdwhatley 13 points14 points ago

I've wanted to use it, but they make finding your friends so needlessly complicated as to make it not worth it. I want to just be able to find people by name but noooooo

[–]Fantikerz 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seriously! When you upload your contacts, the list of people they show you is also filled with a bunch of random people that also use Game Center (and were not in your contacts). You have to slowly move down the list and inspect each person to see if you actually know them. A really stupid way of making Game Center look more active, since very few people I know use it.

Me and my brother and our girlfriends compete on some games leader boards and achievements. I really enjoy it. It adds a dimension to single player games that allows me to compete. I'm more likely to play a level over a few times so my girlfriend doesn't have a thousand more points on her score than me.

I understand not everyone uses it or even knows its there but I do enjoy it.

EDIT: nevermind

You spoke too soon. The rage is back now that everyone sees it's a speedbump that should've happened at least a year ago. No USB3, no Thunderbolt, old graphics card. Apple gives negative fucks about this machine. I'm curious why they even bothered.

[–]bumwine 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The only way it makes sense is if they really weren't even planning on it but seeing as the whole thing is about developers they decided at the last minute to at least bump it.

The GPU is simply inexcusable though, GPU compute applications are becoming more and more common for professionals yet they're offering a low-end chip from two generations ago (which is ancient as far as tech goes).

They don't seem to offer the upgraded SSD sizes unless you go for the next MBP up the line, $2799 for 512GB. Why do they do that?

I'll probably get the lower spec machine of the two and just not have the option for a larger SSD. Because apple says so.

Looks an amazing machine, but won't be in many people's price range.

Real shame they absolutely refuse to put an even slightly higher resolution screen in the 13" MBP. Doesn't need to be retina, but 1280x800 is very sub-par these days.

[–]masklinn 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Real shame they absolutely refuse to put an even slightly higher resolution screen in the 13" MBP.

Considering they didn't even mention the 17" MBP and the "new-generation MBP" is 15.4, I'm guessing the 13" is dead (for the 13" MBA) and MBAs will get some sort of refresh next year with retina display and maybe the same style as the new MBP.

[–]mirth23 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oddly, the MBA 13" is 1440x900 while the MBP 13" is 1280x800. No clue why they wouldn't have the MBP at least match the MBA.

Diablo 3 Retina ready!?!?!? I was looking for a new computer...

[–]bluescrn 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm surprised it even needed to be stated that it's retina-ready, as it can already run at just about any resolution (well, at least on PC).

I suspect newish games are going to chug pretty badly at full resolution, though. Mobile GPUs just don't have the power/bandwidth to do all the shadery stuff and full-screen postprocessing at such huge resolutions.

[–]gavrocheBxN 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's about the interface being bigger for retina display because otherwise you wouldnt be able to read the text. So it's not only the ability to change the resolution.

[–]sfrazer 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Retina-ready in this case is going to be a flag in the build that tells the OS not to pixel-double the output.

This is going to be extremely bad, hopefully there'll be a standalone app from* google we can install.

Apple maps will probably be very good in the US, but outside of that we'll be stuck with their usual half-assed deals (like how siri can't give driving directions to Stockholm, really?). Google has a first class system for everything in regards to maps, be it driving directions, walking directions, public transportation, and it all works - at least in the case of the greater Stockholm area - better than the actual public transportation app/website.

Apple maps is going to be a huge disappointment, and if there's no Google Maps-app, I'm staying on iOS5 for sure.

Everyone at HP and Dell is probably going, "God damnit! We just figured out how to do ultrabooks, why do you do this to us Apple! WHY!"

[–]TwoChe 51 points52 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably, but they are probably also not too worried given the price point.

Think 1st-gen MacBook Air...

[–]realnowhereman[!] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

well, they're not really that cheaper. That's mostly why I'll probably get the Air 13 as my ultrabook

Although I HIGHLY doubt it will happen, a new iPod Classic after 1,000 days would be pretty awesome.

[–]ascagnel 2 points3 points ago

Wait til October. If it happens, it'll happen with the iPod refresh.

'Do not Disturb' is nice, but when it's buried away in settings it's not very convenient.

[–]velvetabyss 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not buried, it's right there on the top portion of the Settings app, like Airplane Mode and the WiFi connection setting.

[–]thedragon4453 2 points3 points ago

Still, needs to be something like NCsettings or SBSettings.

Today!

[–]BrewerMan 6 points7 points ago

[–]Yurishimo 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And like android has kept stock since it hit mainstream popularity? not sure about WP7 but I find it pretty sad that Apple didn't incorporate this even in a little update somewhere, because really, is it that hard to implement?

[–]joshicshin 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh shit! Facebook is probably not happy about the shared photo streams thing. They are in the business of photo sharing quite honestly.

[–]hellohurricane87 14 points15 points ago

Yes but I am extremely happy. As fb grows, my distrust grows with it.

Wow aggressive pricing on the new mbpro

[–]joshicshin 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Aw, that's a shame. I'm glad they are pricing Mountain Lion so cheap, but I would have liked for it to come out sooner.

Edit: WOAH! All the way back to Snow Leopard at that price? So I'm guessing this is their way to get people off legacy software faster.

BEST. IOS. UPDATE. EVER.

[–]brodel2 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ever since iOS 5 I have been missing the ability to turn notifications off. It looks like Do Not Disturb will fix that. I wish they had waited to remove the ability to turn them off until after they added Do Not Disturb though.

I'm the classic Apple user.. I am happy with them for giving me back the ability they took from me with their last update.

I know the other stuff they added is cool, but Do Not Disturb was what I was most happy to see. The ability to set up a schedule for it means I'll never have to think about the nighttime routine of turning off every damn notification and mail sound before I go to bed again.

[–]johns2289 7 points8 points ago

yeah apple nailed it this time. i was pretty sure i was gonna be underwhelmed but they've plugged most of the little holes in the os that bug me so i'm pretty happy

Does anybody know, from the recent years, when they say "Shipping today", when exactly does that start, like, nighttime or before that. Seems like these macbooks will go out of stock quickly given the demand.

why no etherent on new MBP.. I don't want an adapter.

[–]SupremeFuzzler 135 points136 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The height of a female RJ-45 socket is approx. 0.66 inches. The new MBP is 0.71 inches, including the screen. Apple isn't going to sacrifice the form factor for the sake of a forty year old phone jack.

2 thunderbolts port, they'll support ethernet.

[–]longshot2025 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think a thunderbolt adapter is more likely. HDMI has had Ethernet for a while, and I haven't seen any other computers make use of it.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ugh, that does suck.

[–]bpage 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am guessing it has to do with height, but still. You have what i see as a bad ass pro machine, with two thunderbolt ports...but no etherent? crazy.

[–]EF08F67C-9ACD-49A2-B 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Its the height. An RJ-45 connector is thicker than the computer's base.

[–]sodoh 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thunderbolt has ethernet. I have my cable plugged into my monitor.

Although with wifi settings they have on that thing it is unlikely to be any issue.

[–]brown3jh 9 points10 points ago

[–]joshicshin 2 points3 points ago

A valid point. I was just hoping Mountain Lion would be released in the next week or so making it a moot point.

[–]splinterprospekt 5 points6 points ago

[–]tctony[S] 4 points5 points ago
