Find like-minded people who can relate, preferably out in the real world, and rant rant rant.

You're never going to be able to change people's minds, especially by force. The best thing I've found is acceptance that they're not in the same place as you right now.

Tyfud [S] 3 points4 points 1 month ago[-]

I've got a friend or two who helps keep me sane. He's actually the one responsible for fully moving off the christian bandwagon. I was raised christian conservative, however I always knew something was off. I'm also a fairly rational person and very willing to debate/take input from people. aka, someone who can legitimately change their mind when a strong enough point is made.

He was this person. And since then, I haven't looked at things the same way again. It filled that missing piece of the wtf puzzle of my upbringing. We bounce stuff off each other all the time now, but still, we're surrounded by people who believe in voodoo.

As for them not being in the same place as me right now, I'm not sure if they'll ever get there. All of my old friends from growing up are all insane Christian "soldiers". None of them budge in any way, and all of them think I'm a madman.

I have a friend named Adam that I meat off of Youtube, granite he's country away, but we both talk on msn and actually see each other while using the webcam. So yeah, get some atheist friends either online or in the 'real world' that should help a lot!

Norway is pretty awesome. But Canada too, and it's less expensive I think.

Airazz 2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]

Sometimes people are brainwashed too much and you can't change anything, it's too late. You have to accept that and stop giving a fuck.

By the way, I use that Amway stuff too. Not really the vitamins, but more the dish washing liquid, clothes washing powder, soap, tooth paste, car shampoo, hair shampoo, etc. It works well, and it's cheaper than the much-advertised stuff from the local supermarket.

Tyfud [S] 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

Definitely not bashing the cleaning products, which work awesomely well. More or less just harping on them for all of their vitamin products, which for the most part, are all homeopathic as near as I can tell.

Airazz -2 points-1 points 1 month ago[-]

I don't know if this is accident or if they actually work, but we have been using these vitamins for nearly 12 years now and I have never been ill for more than two days (once every two years or so).

xtraspecialj 3 points4 points 1 month ago[-]

I eat crappy food, don't work out, don't take vitamins, am constantly stressed about money and work, and I drink 2 Mountain Dews a day. I have not been sick more than 2 days for at least 10 years.
My point is, the experiences of one person means almost nothing when it comes to deciding if something works or not.
So I would say coincidence rather than "accident".

"I know god exists, because I have personally experienced good fortune and am a religious person, that can't be a coincidence"

"I know these vitamins work, because I have personally experience good health and take these vitamins, that can't be a coincidence"

;)

Airazz -2 points-1 points 1 month ago[-]

I don't believe in god, we all are a fully aheistic family.

But yea, I wouldn't say that it's 100% the vitamins. But they are kinda cheap (we have a 50% discount on everything in their website), so I think I can try that.

ztherion 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

WOOSH.

Airazz 0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]

On the other hand, if everything else they sell works (we already agreed on that with the OP), why vitamins shouldn't? It's not like they are selling diamond dust or grinded tiger bones. They are selling simple basic vitamins, fish oil, etc.

HenryBenjy 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

car shampoo???

Airazz 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

Oh yea, it's Carpet Shampoo. The one for cars is called Car Wash. 10ml (one standard spoon) into one bucket of water (10Litres). Afterwards the car is nice and shiny. And grass in my yard starts growing nicer and faster because I wash the car in the yard and we don't have drain system (grass de-soaking system?)there.

I struggle with the same feeling. I fantasize of a place/country/different planet where I don't have to deal with the stupidity, irrationality, and all-around ridiculousness of people.

Then again, that feeling gave me a nervous breakdown that required me to take a week off work taking 3 xanax a day. Now I'm trying to simply learn to cope with the rest of the world.

I realize, now, that learning to cope with the rest of the world is what we are expected to do and is why we end up jaded.

For all the fucking weirdness of it, living in China can be pretty great and a bit of a respite from American bullshit. A surprising amount of people I met have great analytical reasoning ability, they just merely haven't been educated as much as Westerners. They're merely irrational about things in a different way. I like it here.

Also, I'm very sure that Australia needs skilled workers. If you have a degree in something and aren't semi-retarded, apply to live in Australia, and you can probably get a nice gig. NZ and Canada might be the same, not sure. Have the courage to move and you won't have to be so jaded, man. The Uni I got a job at in China is paying for my visa, my airfare to and from USA, and everything's cheaper there so my savings go a lot longer. It doesn't have to be expensive, it doesn't have to be impossible. Just be willing to try something drastic, or maybe do nothing and risk another nervous breakdown, which clearly is not drastic at all :-/

Brachinus 2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]

The quote about alternative medicine is from Tim Minchin, and he's also a great answer to the question, "where to go?" Humor can keep you sane in a world full of crazies.

BTW, you can't change everybody, even (especially) your family. That's just life, and everyone goes through it (your parents are going through it with you -- you think they wouldn't like to show you the "error" of your ways, as they see it?).

[deleted] 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

You sound a lot like the wife and myself. We try very hard to be tolerant and respectful, but it is quite taxing. Norway is the answer, at least for us.

Tyfud [S] 0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]

How difficult was the transition to make to Norway? What's involved in the process? I'd rather support a country, financially, that is more in line with my convictions, than continue to support the madness that seems to be America right now.

DeliriumWartner 4 points5 points 1 month ago[-]

I'm in the UK here and it's a fairly atheist-friendly place. Over here a politician's rating actually goes down if they admit to being religious. Most of my friends are atheists/agnostics or non-religious. I even helped a dogmatised Muslim friend admit to himself (and eventually his mother) that he had doubts. I was so proud of him when he told me.

Anyway, if you do ever make it to the UK wing me a msg and we'll meet up. Might do you some good to meet a few like-minded people.

Tyfud [S] 0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]

I'll be honest. Living in the UK sounds awesome. I've got a developer friend in Leeds right now, he came to visit a few months back. Seems like things are much more atheist friendly over there. Of course, I guess it helps when your national religion was created so a king could get a divorce and murder a few wives :)

DeliriumWartner 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

I actually live near Leeds myself. It's not too bad here, freedom-wise, though of course there are downsides too. Plus our immigration laws are a joke right now, at least until the current gov gets their collective butts into gear.

English_Gentleman 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

Aye, the UK may have it's bad points, but religion is pretty much dead here, if anyone is religious they keep it to themselves, and if they don't, people think they're weird. (Im in Doncaster myself, so I don't know how the rest of the country is, but my 6th form biology teacher openly mocks religion)

[deleted] 2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]

Sorry if I gave the wrong impression, that is our long-term goal. Should be about 8 years from now, if everything goes as planned. It is quite complicated, and I often feel guilty that we are so adamant about it. It seems almost as if running away is the cowardly option, and yet we cannot possibly change things ourselves. We simply want to live freely, where other can do the same equally. That isn't possible here, it only looks to get worse, and religion carries a lot of that blame.

Tyfud [S] 0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]

awww :( So no golden ticket...

zyle 2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]

You're in Chicago and think you have it rough? Thank Zeus that you're not in some hick bible state dude.

Have you tried attending any of the Chicago atheist meetup.com groups? I have, and turnout can be huge, anywhere from 10 to 30 people at times. I recommend you look into that first as a support system before packing up and moving to another country...

Tyfud [S] 0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]

I came to Chicago from Texas ;) East Texas. My family lives in Louisiana, and Texas the hickest parts of it. And I have not attended the Chicago atheist groups, that's a good idea.

wonderfuldog 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

I can't take it any more either, and I've been in that situation for a long time.

Trying to make people smarter is a lot like trying to make them taller. Yeah, there are probably some radical interventions of marginal effectiveness, but on the whole, what you see is what you get.

I've never been able to come up with any sort of solution other than to avoid interacting with people as much as possible, which is of limited utility.

I do expect to die young of stress-related illness.

one of my favorite quotes (can't remember where it's from) saying: You know what they call alternative medicine that works? Medicine.,

Sounds a bit like Dara O'Brian. At least, in this clip he says something like "They say that herbal medicine has been around for thousand of years, and it has; and the stuff that worked became medicine!".

He talks a bit about quackery in general; pretty funny.

Gargilius 3 points4 points 1 month ago[-]

Take consolation in the fact that you, and millions of others, now and throughout the annals of history, have had the perspicacity to see through or at least be skeptical of such drivel. As bad as things are, the world could be worse.

It is not your responsibility to teach even one adult the correct way to think. This is a nearly impossible task, unless a person is very young and her mind, malleable.

schnitzi 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

I don't think he invented the phrase about alternative medicine, but check out this awesome video by Tim Minchin that uses it...

BdotDS 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

Nothing you can do, I'm afraid. Religion, much like conservatism, stems from an irrational need for emotional reassurance. Some people act on logical impulse, and some act on emotional impulse. You can't reason with the latter, because objections just make them dig their heels in even further. Its a concept called commitment and consistency. Read a book called Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Dr. Robert Cialdini(Psychology/business professor at ASU)

Potassium39 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

New Zealand! Seriously, we're pretty awesome over here, there's maybe 55% Christians, 35% Atheists and the rest are all random other religions. We all get on pretty damn well, there's a few little silly bits here and there, but generally all is well.

So yeah, assuming immigration isn't too much of a dick, there's always us.

Or I suppose you could go to Australia or maybe the Scandanavian countries.

Originally from Christchurch, but I ditched that horrible place for delightful warm, sunny Dunedin.

And I mean warm, seriously, those couch fires keep you nice and toasty during the winter. The alcohol too. If you're a student in Dunners and you're cold, you obviously need to consume more booze and put another couch or two on the fire.

What about you?

TangLikeAnAstronaut 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

First off, quit trying to reason people out of holes they didn't reason themselves into in the first place. The slow embrace of rational thought will expand over time. It will take generations, and can't be done now on an individual basis of antagonistic augment. First and foremost, demonstrate humility. Beyond that, set a good example. Don't feed the notion that atheists are arrogant.

We can spread rational thought. It will just take a long time, and we have to stop looking like dicks.

I have a good idea on how you can get them started..... Look though their Homeopathic stuff... find a sleep aid. Take a good look at it's active ingredients (probably coffee) and if it's legitimately Homeopathic and nice and safe, overdose on it in front of them... Just like James Randi.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWE1tH93G9U James Randi is pretty amazing with these sorts of things, I wasn't even aware what homeopathic medicine was until I saw this lecture. Seeing some of the comments on the video lashing out in anger kind of amazes me.

Edit: Some of the comments in general just amaze me. "I am a scientist. [...] Homeopathy exists energetically & quantum physics will proove this oneday : )"
