Just a theory but: -Perhaps they lost pitch-up control authority, and ended up pointing towards the ground. -By turning the aircraft upside down they could push forward on the stick to flare. -Trimming nose down was to keep it from pulling towards the ground once it was upside down.

Probably being ridiculous. That being said, I really want to see this movie.

I'm assuming the problem is the elevator is stuck in a nose-down position. Rolling the plane inverted means it is now stuck in an effective nose-up position, which (as long as a stall is avoided) will keep the plane in the air.

As for the trim, when the elevator is stuck, the function of the trim inverts (so nose down becomes nose up, and vice versa). BUT, when the plane is inverted, the trim function is also inverted. Two inverteds cancel out, and so the nose down trim will counteract the stuck "nose-up" elevator.

Or, it could have just sounded cool to the movie writer.

Just watched the film tonight - you are correct. The trim elevator became stuck in a nose-down position.

Maybe if the stick was jammed in a rearward position you'd have to trim down to use the airflow to help move the stick forwards and offload the g to un-stall the wings and try to exit the spin? Not sure about the landing upside down part O_o

Because everyone knows that gravity changes when you are upside down in a plane.
