Shots fired in kendall square (self.boston)
submitted 11 months ago by stickmaster_flex
Near or in the t station. I heard that 2 suspects are in custody.
[–]stickmaster_flex[S] 10 points11 points12 points 11 months ago
http://www.universalhub.com/2012/manhunt-across-charles-after-shots-fired-kendall-s
2 suspects, not 1.
[–]stickmaster_flex[S] 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
Ok, sounds like only one suspect now, crashed on the Longfellow, and fled on foot to Charles mgh, picked up at kendall. He was chased all the way from storrow. Might be a gang member involved in gun running. None of this is confirmed, all from twitter.
[–]gnimshBlue Line 3 points4 points5 points 11 months ago
I was waiting for the red line when this happened, but only had to wait 20 minutes. I tweeted the mbtagm to see if he can tell all the criminals to stop going into T stations when being chased by the police, but I doubt they'll listen :D
[–]icu_ 5 points6 points7 points 11 months ago
I was waiting too and just rolled my eyes and said "police action.. right". Can't believe anyone thought of the Red line for a fast getaway.
[–]ogref -2 points-1 points0 points 11 months ago
I was the asshole shouting to everyone coming in the express entrance to "been waiting 30 minutes... Turn around". Then hailed the first cab I could find to Alewife garage.
That was a mess... When the cab drive by the main Kendall entrance I saw the one suspect the had in custody...
Look I waited 10 minutes for the train... Got on the packed to shit train, had the doors close, stood there for 3 minutes while the train DIDN'T move, watched the gun drawn Cambridge police look at each and every one of us like we're aquarium folk, got told 2 minutes after to get off the train, got told 30 seconds later that we could get back in the train, (of which now there was no room at all for my fat ass) and watched the Cambridge police, MSP, and transit police make a complete mockery of their profession by keeping the train there for an additional 15 minutes....
My wife is pregnant, I was late out of work and I didn't sleep last night... Sorry if I offended anyone with my grumbling... I was slightly annoyed.
Oh, and those fucks with a gun? They owe me $42... $40 for the cab and $2 for the wasted train ticket... Maybe I can get paid back on their arraignment day.
Tl;dr: I'm a bitter fuck. The suspects owe me $.
[–]Mfwimp 3 points4 points5 points 11 months ago
First glance I thought you wrote, "I was the asshole shooting everyone."
[–]ogref 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
That probably explains the downvotes... On the plus side, you made me laugh... I thank you.
[–]Gemini6Ice 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago
I was the asshole shouting to everyone coming in the express entrance to "been waiting 30 minutes... Turn around"
I think that makes you a considerate person trying to help others. :)
[–]crazy0 3 points4 points5 points 11 months ago
and that is why I bike. Public Transportation free for 10 years! Its good for your soul
[–]zeppelinfromled 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
My girlfriend was actually on the train that they were searching for him on. Craziness.
[–]Hyperbowleeeeeeeeeee 5 points6 points7 points 11 months ago
sooo... the early reports were ambiguous about who actually fired a weapon. this report admits it was the statie.
so he fired from his moving cruiser in the middle of kendall square at rush hour? or did he get out of his cruiser and discharge his weapon in the middle of rush hour? this should really be clarified a bit...
[–]guisar 5 points6 points7 points 11 months ago
Inside the cruiser you can eat with one hand and shoot with the other, outside you're required to use two hands to aim.
[–]solipskier 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
So that's what the police cars and all of the traffic was when I left work.
[–]stealmenow 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
Just ran through Kendall and across the longfellow bridge. Tons of cops across the bridge as well. Not sure if related, or a traffic accident. Never seen so many cops/ambulances/firetrucks in force in the area.
[–]SveNss0N 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
Having live 5+ years in Kendall Sq up until 2 years ago I'm in complete disbelief. I thought that it was the safest area in the Boston area. Who broke the matrix...
[–]caldera15 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
well with all those sterile looking science-y buildings owned by MIT you have to figure eventually it'd attract shenanigans.
[–]Gemini6Ice 7 points8 points9 points 11 months ago
We expected Fringe-like shenanigans (melting faces, nanites, or strange flashes of light), not mundane criminals.
[–]Parcanman 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
That kind of stuff doesn't usually happen in Cambridge, instead it happens in any random town name off a map of Massachusetts. I liked seeing the Palm trees in the distance in Framingham or the mountains in the distance in Millis.
[–]sharkpizza 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
Thanks. This explains the police cruiser parade this evening.
[–]hydrogenous 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
Isn't it impossible for a person to get a License to Carry Firearms in Boston (unless you're LEO)?
/s
[–]stickmaster_flex[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
No, but it's difficult. Not as bad in Somerville, I have a ccw from there.
The point I was trying to make was that this was probably an unlawful gun owner with an illegal firearm... HAve you heard of Hightower v. Boston?
I just read about it but I didn't understand most of what I read.
It was definitely an unlawful gun owner with an illegal firearm. That much goes without saying.
[–]last2zero -1 points0 points1 point 11 months ago
Holy shit the area really is getting more and more dangerous....
:(
[–]TechSgtChen 5 points6 points7 points 11 months ago
Just this and that shooting a couple weeks ago? Or did I miss something?
[–]tennmyc21 7 points8 points9 points 11 months ago
And all the muggings around Halloween of 2011. Generally speaking, I think it's a pretty safe area, but you still have to remember you're in a big city. Plus, this shooting and the one from a couple weeks ago were not some sort of random drive-bys. Not sure about the circumstances around this one, but the other seems like a very targeted attempted murder gone very, very wrong. This one I guess is some how gang related (granted, probably too early to speculate). The muggings were obviously random, but no one was hurt in those and I'm sure people getting mugged is pretty common throughout the Boston area.
[–]guisar -3 points-2 points-1 points 11 months ago
Big city? Boston is the size of a fucking postage stamp and has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation. Furthermore, our unemployment is one of the lowest, graduation rates are the highest and so on. It's fucking incompetence. My daugher lives in NYC and I feel much safer walking around there than at home (not to mention the roads actually get repaired, their mayor is not a moron and so forth).
[–]thebackhand 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
New York has had a lower crime rate for years, yes, but Bloomberg is still an idiot and is doing everything he can to ruin the city in his illegal third term.
[–]nichlas482109 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
Strict gun laws in Boston will do nothing to stop gang violence. Just because it's hard to get an LTC doesn't mean it's hard to buy a full auto-matic uzi illegally.
[–]dieselray9999 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
not to mention the nyc subway stations looks like a sterile operating room compared to the grimy ass mbta stations. i find taking the t in the summer can be especially horrible. probably 2/3 of the cars i've been on have broken ac. many times i've ridden in a train car for only one stop, only to switch to another car at the next stop in the hopes of not having breathe in the spent breath of two dozen other people.
[–]izziebot 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
Uhhhh what? I lived / worked in NYC for 8 years; this is nonsense. I find the underground T stations to be a bit cleaner. But overall, they are comparable... at best.
No way NY subways are cleaner unless you've only ever been in Times Square / Grand Central
this was around 9 years ago lol. i took 2 different lines, i went from little italy to the bronx. that was my only experience on the mta, so it's not the most scientific sampling. i was taking the chinatown to chinatown fungwah bus to eventually get to the bronx for a road trip. i have been to nyc 2 or 3 other times, but had traveled by car those times. so i've got to say i believe you.
however, i stand behind my statements that mbta stations are icky.
[–]izziebot 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
Haha. If you wanna be blown away, go to DC. Their subway systems are ridiculously nice. I'm afraid to touch anything lest my filth soil their pristine glow.
[–]nyssa_ 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
I checked out the prices on the DC subway and nearly fainted, no wonder it's so fuckin' clean!
[–]dieselray9999 -1 points0 points1 point 11 months ago
i've heard north korea has a spotless transit system too. i guess fascists can be counted on to keep a train clean xD
[–]Loisbeat 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
Yeah, but the T has so much CHARACTER!
[–]dieselray9999 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
i can't argue with that. it most definitely has character, a grimy, dilapidated character.
[–]crazy0 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
as opposed to the mta, a grimy, dancing, candy selling, dilapidated character
[–]dieselray9999 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago*
it's been a few years since i was last in nyc, but last i was there it looked like the stations were cleaned atleast once a year. mbta below ground stations look & smell like they are covered in residue of evaporated dielectric oils that seem to be hosed all over the track area. i'm not certain, but i'm sure that shit causes mega super aids-cancer. the thing that looks the scuzziest are those yellow knobby tiles that line the edges of the platforms.
[–]Gemini6Ice -1 points0 points1 point 11 months ago
their mayor is not a moron and so forth
I would say, rather, NYC's mayor can enunciate. But a ban on cups of soda larger than 16 ounces seems pretty silly (and ineffective) to me.
[–]last2zero 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
Also while not Cambridge specific the random stabbings last week doesn't help with Boston's over all public image.
I know that as a whole most of these are isolated random events that I shouldn't be overly concerned about.
But it just seems like each week for the past month something's "worrisome" made the papers.
[–]abeuscher 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
Well, Harvard was the number one spot for Heroin in the city for white people. Possibly they've moved down the line a bit?
[–]cryoshon 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
Really? Seems odd to me. Would have thought that stimulants were more popular among the Harvard types.
[–]abeuscher 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago
Sorry specifically the phones at the Harvard square t in the pit.
[–]VillainousVagrant 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
and don't forget the people who loiter in the Cambridge Commons. its pretty much filled with old hobos, teenage runaways, and addicts.
[–]abeuscher 10 points11 points12 points 11 months ago
And those goddamned Ultimate Frisbee players, with their belief systems and their toned, sun baked bodies...
[–]loosewasp 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
Heroin is God's way of redistributing wealth.
[–]Gemini6Ice 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
Possibly they've moved down the line a bit?
I thought only cokeheads were supposed to move down the line?
[–]easmussen 3 points4 points5 points 11 months ago
Seriously. I'm wondering if it's a small, isolated pocket that's causing all the problems or if it's more of a widespread thing. It's so strange because in past years the area seems to have improved a lot with new businesses and restaurants, yet this kind of stuff seems to be increasing as well.
[–]GyantSpyder 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago
Area IV in Cambridge has long been a dangerous place (basically between Vassar Street and Prospect Street, from Kendall up to and including Central on the northeast side of Mass. Ave). I think there were some random shots fired in Dana Park over in Cambridgeport this week closer to the river as well. The gang presence always picks way up in the summer -- as I recall a couple of years ago there was a sting where they picked up something like 25 drug dealers at once in Central Square.
So yeah, the violence tends to be pretty contained, with the heart of Kendall not seeing much of it, but with a lot of gang stuff in the Central Square area -- albeit a lot less than there used to be.
I used to live in that area but got mugged there in 2009 and moved out to near Davis.

Apart from maybe the "Yale bubble", neither of those cities have an image of being hubs of academia and innovative industry. They are generally just shitholes that no city should have to compare themselves too, including ours.
They are generally just shitholes
Is it bad that I don't want to write them off completely? I hold out hope that they will improve.
