Thanks for the links.

I've looked into the chess clubs in my city, there seem to be some good ones. I may join one in the future but for now I'm just looking to find tournaments I can join as an individual.

http://birminghamchess.org.uk/ has an Individual listing for individual players, but it doesn't have any tournament listings or events.

Starbucks has chess boards and in Canada I see Chinese guys playing in Tim Horton's all the time.

Do all Starbucks have chess boards? I've never heard of this. Then again, I don't think i've ever been in a Starbucks. I'm a drive through kind of guy.
