I really like American Eagle. I got a bunch of stuff for $100 during their 40% off sale last weekend, and I just got it today and it's all reallyyyyy nice. The jeans fit wonderfully and the shirts are super soft but nice and thick. I was expecting Old Navy quality for the price, but everything is great.

I agree! I was wearing an older tee from there the other day and realized that their t-shirts can last a good 4-5 years at least. Their jeans/pants are one of the only brands that fits me well, too (cheaper brands are too tight in the waist and too loose in the legs).

Seconded. Almost all my jeans are AE. Comfy and fitting.

Came here to post this! Not just their clothes, but also their shoes. I own one pair of flip flops, a pair I bought from them eight years ago. I wear them to the beach, out and about, etc., and they have yet to tear, break, or loosen up.

I'm a big fan of getting the pricier brands for half off on daily sale sites and the like, rather than seeking out lower non-sale prices.

Some favorite labels that I would or have paid full price for and not felt gypped (though obv prefer to get deals on 'em):

  • Tart - really nice drapey modal - heavier, nicer quality fabric than the other modal garments I have. Like anything modal-knit, I lingerie-bag launder them, but they have held up nicely and that hasn't often been the case for me with this fabric, despite careful care. Great (non-modal) undies, too!

  • Micheal Stars - the "shine" fabric tops last FOREVER. I have one that I got in 2002 and it still looks new! I love these - tons of styles & colors, some of which can be paired with work pants and not look under-dressed for the workplace. I've only recently picked up a few of their non-shine material items, but so far so good, wear-wise, with a modal skirt and pima cotton tees.

  • Genetic Denim - great fit. I get compliments every time I wear Genetics. And they seem to last beautifully too - I paid full price for my first pair 5 years ago or so, and have worn/washed them A TON, and they still look great (though the small helix logo embroidery color has faded).

  • Jeffrey Campbell - specifically their low-mid-height pumps & sandals. Might be my favorite shoes ever, including the multicolored Converse high-tops I had as a baby grunge kid in ye olden dayes. More here: http://www.reddit.com/r/femalefashionadvice/comments/ud1at/what_name_brand_of_clothingshoes_do_you_think_is/c4umaap

  • Seychelles - cute, pretty comfy, TONS of styles, and always on sale online (and I'd assume in B&M stores too).

  • Elle Macpherson Intimates - Beautiful mid-range lingerie. Just really pretty underthings. Not scratchy, pokey or uncomfortable; all around lovely.

I've heard of very few of these brands. Where do you buy them?

These days, exclusively online. (YAY!) I'm not sure where you are, so it might be bc they are US brands that you haven't seen them?

Here in SF, Shoe Biz (and probably every other shoe store in town given the ubiquity of these brands on the street) carries Seychelles & Jeffrey Campbell, and several shops on Valencia, Haight & in the Marina carry the clothing brands. Nordstrom has most of these online, and I'd assume in their B&M stores, too. Macy's Impulse used to have stuff like this sometimes, though I haven't been into a Macy's B&M store in years now and their online brand selection didn't wow me.

I like Zara a lot. The prices are reasonable and I have yet to be disappointed in the material.

It's funny... I have bought a zillion things from Forever 21 that have never fallen apart on me. I have a few things from Zara, and one of them completely fell apart in the first wash. It was so strange.

If you're in Canada - Joe, from Superstore!

Haha came here to suggest Joe Fresh as well. They have their own stores in some areas, along with being in Superstores and I think Loblaw's(it's all part of Loblaw's anyway).

Currently work in a Superstore and I'm usually so surprised at the prices of items that I see come through my till.

Edit: Oh cool, they have locations outside Canada on their website!

Oh yes!!! I am wearing a Joe dress right now. It's super comfortable and I bought it to wear as a nightgown/lounge about dress because it was so soft but it's so pretty that I sometimes wear it out and about too :)

I have a couple cardigans from Loft that I love, but the last couple tops I've ordered have been waaay off in the fit. :(

H&M, but it's usually a hit or miss. I can always find at least 2-3 things in the store that I like, though, and it's fairly cheap for the quality you're getting.

[–]kendrahwithanh 5 points6 points ago

H&M always holds up over the years for me. The only thing i wouldn't buy is jeans/pants because they get a lot more wear and tear than shirts/dresses and you'll notice the lack of quality a lot faster. But I've had so many basics from them for years. good stuff.

One of my favourite blouses is a cotton&lace H&M thing. It's held up very nicely and the quality is not bad at all.

I regularly find good quality H&M skirts in thrift stores, the silhouettes and pattern/color choices are quite timeless.

I've found for H&M in the UK that almost everything I love is the good quality expensive stuff but inevitably goes on sale super cheap. Sadly that isn;t the case in The Netherlands though, and they stock slightly more to my preference there.

Except t-shirts (or anything else they make from jersey cotton). That rubbish twists at the side seams like no other.

CoS has awesome pieces with much better fabrics/workmanship than H&M mainline and only a slightly higher pricepoint. Highly recommended.

[–]johnpokey 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I recently bought a CoS shirt online and I returned it. It was a structured white blouse and the fabric was so sheer that even wearing an undershirt still looked bad because you could see all the seams (the sheerness of the fabric did not jive with the design of the shirt IMO). I was disappointed because I liked almost everything on their website.

But it could have been a one-time fluke and I would definitely rather try buying something there before going to H&M because I was so impressed with their styling.

As with anything H&M, it can still definitely be hit and miss. Once in a while they hit it out of the park though, and their basics have nice little details. Just wish they would open in the US so I don't have to beg friends in the EU to bring me stuff back.

I like the outlets, those are great places to really explore a new closet without going over budget.

I have a more business style so some of the places I shop are:

  • Suzy Shier (suits, dresses, coats, stockings, etc)[Fairly cheap in outfits and quality usually lasts about a year or so, depending on how much you wear it and how you wash it]
  • Smart Set (anything really, although mainly business dresses) [Pretty good quality, didn't have any damages so far]
  • Dynamite (lots of business-causal skirts and shirts) [Pretty good quality]/ Garage (usually more for belts though)
  • Gap (t-shirts, fitted-blouses, skinny pants, and cardigans) [Very good quality]
  • H&M (yes, it is a hit or miss- bought a dress and wore/loved it to bits) [Great quality]
  • Aldo (accessories and shoes) [It is okay, bought lots of ties there and they're still intact]
  • Marshall's (good for accessories and shoes) [Love their shoes!]

Hope this helps! =) Try to dig for the outlets and explore new styles =)

Sometimes if you did through the clothing racks you can find some decent stuff there too! I go there every now and often for shorts and underwear.

There's a store by me called "Love Culture" and I like them. I feel like their quality is better than forever 21's and the prices are cheaper than forever 21 as well.

Department stores are great like macy's and bloomingdale's...they take coupons on sale and clearance items.

I've purchased a lot of great stuff from JCrew Factory, the quality and style of the clothes are as nice as the regular shop but much cheaper and often go on sale.

Somebody posted here about some sequined tanks not too long ago that were really cute, and a total steal at the sale price from there.

Sometimes I find fantastic stuff in terms of style and price at Costa Blanca and Urban Behaviour (same company), the quality ranges but they generally hold well against washing and time.

I think Target is pretty high quality for the price. I would say a good 1/3 of my clothing is from there and I have no issues. It's great for basics and always has good sales. JC Penny and other department stores are really not bad, either.

Outside of those, I like American Eagle, Gap, and Express but mostly when there are sales.. I think they're a tad bit expensitve at full tag price, but they're all stores that have a lot of sales. H&M is good for lower price but I think the quality is just a step below the others. Not a big one, though- it'll still last a while!

I love Maurice's, H&M and American Eagle. Probably 80% of my wardrobe come from those three. Always look for sales, though.

I've noticed the prices at Joe Fresh going up to the point where I just can't bring myself to buy a $60 cardigan at the grocery store

[–]JKSacha 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

no, the $100 shoes made me laugh out loud. The whole reason behind selling joe fresh in grocery stores was so women and men on the go can pick up an outfit quickly without having to travel to a bunch of different stores while getting their food. I don't know about you, but usually I'm already dropping $50 to $100 bucks while I am already there and adding $100 to my bill for shoes is just ridiculous.

I feel ya. I saw these yellow loafers last week and they were not the comfiest shoes I've ever tried but I loved the colour. I kept thinking why anyone would pay $50 at Joe when they can get the something comfortable for the same price (+/-) at The Bay.

However their nail polishes are amazing!

If you live near NYC, try Uniqlo. Their clothing is usually really well-made. I think they're expanding to the rest of the US soon, too!

I like Plato's Closet, but it's a used clothing store so the quality isn't very consistent.
