Not your fault :)

It just bugs me that Apple would leave out the iPad 1 when it was launched a year later than the 3GS, but oh well, at least I can still enjoy the hell out of turn-by-turn navigation on my 3GS, so not everything's bad.

[–]sensenomake 12 points13 points ago

Probably since they still sell the 3GS, but not the iPad 1.

I read that turn by turn requires 4s or iPad and newer....

I'm sure we can also get all the features apple leaves out in a jailbreak thing or some ISPW.

I sure hope so, I must say I was really hoping for more than just two years of software support for the iPad. Oh well.

[–]TallestSkil 5 points6 points ago

First-gen iPad users have had barely a year of software support.

You could buy a first-gen only 15 months ago, remember.

Yeah, I was counting from the release date, but you're right, I actually bought mine when the iPad 2 was released to save some cash.

Likely there will be features unavailable for 3GS and maybe 4... since the new iPhone will come with iOS 6 and the 3GS will be 3 generations old...

We're still not getting Siri, unless we jailbreak( which really everyone should anyway ), and open ourselves up to the multitude of security vulnerabilities that come with Spire.

OMG Apple finally listened!!!

On the phone front, Apple is adding a feature that several other phones have added in the past: text replies right from the call screen, so that you can immediately text back if you can't take a call — you can select from a list of prewritten messages at the time of rejection. A new Do Not Disturb mode allows you to completely turn off incoming calls and messages on a schedule of your choosing and whitelist certain people — interestingly, you can also set it up so that if someone calls twice within a set period of time, the second call will come through.

SHUT UP AND TAKE THE MONEY I DON'T HAVE YET MBP!

[–]hookguy 0 points1 point ago

Still obscenely expensive for the specs, though I didn't expect that to change

[–]latino_steak_knife 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not all about the specs. For all the R&D that went into the new thin MBP I'd say it's pretty fair.

[–]hookguy 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True, apple are all about premium products. I suppose they did lower the price of the air, which is good. But to me laptops are too fragile to spent such a huge amount on. I normally buy a good desktop and an average laptop for word processing on the go and it turns out cheaper than the lowest price MacBook.

[–]mattsgotredhair 0 points1 point ago

Sounds like you don't need a MBP. If you were a video editor, that new MBP has things you've been wanting for years and all sorts of power and screen size that you'd really need. I'd willingly pay the 2200 for this one.

[–]edem777 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In my opinion is not about the money, is more about the next generation of notebooks, the MBP w/retina display is the first of many to come next years, and in a year or two they will have a more affordable cost or specs that most of the people use (cause lets accept it, the spec of those machines are for photographers, designers etc etc). That Machine is the announcement of the new line of MBP's, is just the beginning. They will make a 15" or 13" MPB with specs for "average people" that will cost 1000-1200 that will replace the MBPs of today.

Show me a laptop with similar specs, form factor and display for less...

[–]hookguy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Form factor isn't worth 1000 dollars.

Examples, asus ultrabooks, new Lenovo think pads. All have similar/better specs for a lower price, not the retina display but that's pretty much unique to apple I'll give them that.

[–]CntrldChaos 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been trying to find a comparable unit, I can't seem to find a laptop with similar specs let alone better specs.

SSD at 256, 15", i7 processor seem to be the key pieces to focus on and ignoring the retina screen which is tough to get.

Where are you seeing an Asus or Lenovo at 1k less?

Aw, well I kind of wanted Siri. Oh well. iPhone 4 user wanders through a desolate city. Even the wind is gone

[–]jakebluu 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The iPhone 4 won't get Siri?

[–]Cdif 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unless I read the above guide incorrectly, no, it won't. People have said it won't because the S in 4S stands for Siri. But the new iPad isn't called the iPadS so...

[–]cbmuser 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The official reason why the old iPhone 4 won't get Siri is that it lacks a certain digital signal processor (DSP) that is present in the 4S model. It's supposed to assist the CPU when processing the voice data and speeding up recognition.

PS: I don't think the "S" is an official acronym for Siri, they just took over their from the 3G->3GS update, where the "S" supposed to stand for speed.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Err... Siri apparently works just fine on a jailbroken 4 so long as one jumps through some ridiculous hoops to get past Apple's authentication system.

My girlfriend bought a 4 less than a year ago when it was the latest announced model. Apparently, it's now too obsolete to even do navigation.

[–]cbmuser 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I'm not upset either. I have an iPhone 4 as well and I'm neither getting Siri nor turn-by-turn navigation.

But I know that Apple sets high quality standards and if they figured out that Siri doesn't work pleasently reliable and fast in all supported languages without the DSP, it's comprehensible they won't ship it on the 4.

On the other hand, I can't think of a technical reason not to ship turn-by-turn navigation on the 4.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The voice recognition for Siri does not take place on the phone, but instead is done on Apple's servers. To the best of anyone's knowledge, the only thing keeping the iPhone 4 from running Siri just as well as the iPhone 4S is an authentication system on Apple's servers preventing the older phone from using the system; bypass that restriction in some way, and Siri works fine.

See, for example, the first video on this page. This post explains some technical details, and this post describes a semi-legal if circuitous and impractical method of getting Siri to run on an iPhone 4.

[–]cbmuser 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The voice recognition for Siri does not take place on the phone, but instead is done on Apple's servers.

Is there a source for that? The fact is, the iPhone 4S does have an additional DSP and it is allegedly being used for voice processing.

bypass that restriction in some way, and Siri works fine.

Well, it works fine by standards of the few guys who tested it. But does it run fine for everyone? What about non-English languages? What about environments with loud background noise?

I know these videos with demonstrations of Siri running on an iPhone 4 and the iPod touch 4th gen. However, from these it's hard to tell how good and reliable the overall performance of Siri on these devices is.

[–]Cdif 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm pretty sure Apple has actually said that the S stands for Siri.

That's odd. I had Siri before when it was actually an app. Worked great but I can see Apple does it differently.

[–]cbmuser 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm pretty sure Apple has actually said that the S stands for Siri.

Well, does it say so anywhere on their website?

That's odd. I had Siri before when it was actually an app.

I'm just repeating what experts had to say on the new A5 SOC found in the 4S.

The hope is that Google will manage to get an app based Gmaps onto the phones in time for the update.

No one knows if Apple will allow that though. I highly doubt even 5% of users would jump ship if the phone scrapped mapping entirely and Apple knows it. Here's to hoping though....

I believe the Pro is, sadly, the end of computers.

We have reached the back wall on the Pro. There is no more thinner, there is no more higher resolution, and any other changes (longer battery life, more RAM, more storage, etc.) are all just evolutionary changes.

We have hit the back wall and the Pro is the sublime machine we have dreamed of for several decades and now, we're done.

[–]dmanww 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have a feeling it'll end up like cars. The technology will filter down and there will be very little functional difference between the low-mid and the high end.

I think we're pretty close to that with desktops already.

Also, why not iphone + dock = desktop for most people.

[–]squired 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Desktop are a LONG way from being there. The differences between a $500 desktop and a $1500+ desktop are vast. SSD's, RAID arrays, muticore GPU's, i7's vs. i3's, etc.

Not to mention cooling options, and efficiency and decibel ratings...

[–]Etab 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think we're close, but I think batteries need to evolve quite a bit yet. I dream of a time where a laptop can go a week or two before needing a charge.

[–]ITripFatPpl 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For cellphones yes, laptops I'm good, the fact that I can go onto my university campus and be fine as long as I use my macbook for less than 8 hours is pretty phenomenal, coming from a dell that barley scraped over an hour (also while taking twice as long as the macbook to do things, at best) I'm perfectly happy. And everyone has a macbook, if I ever need it there's usually someone with a cable.

[–]BlazedAndConfused 0 points1 point ago

[–]rarisgod 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Such as?

[–]whiskeytab 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

  • UI overhaul, lets be honest, iOS is nice but its the same UI as the first iPhone
  • Widgets (Weather, iPod, Quick settings access, see DashboardX)
  • Ability to reply to an SMS/iMessage without opening the god damn messages app (see BiteSMS)
  • Better folders (this may or may not have been fixed in iOS 6, i haven't looked too deeply in to it)
  • Lockscreen information (see IntelliscreenX)
  • Better notification center, there is so much that could be done with it
  • Ability to remove the stock apps that aren't wanted (Newsstand, Stocks...)
  • Status Bar indicators... come on.
  • Different profiles for alerts (i.e setting it so on a workday it goes silent automatically according to your work hours and turns back on when you're done, stuff like that)
  • Being able to send voice notes, locations and contacts from within the messages app, not the ass-backwards way you have to do it at the moment
  • Being able to type in to siri and have it parsed the same way as the voice commands are, for times when you are somewhere quiet and don't want to be talking in to your phone.

The main thing that annoys me is that most of these things have been added / fixed by the jailbreak community for years... on current hardware. There really isn't any excuse for apple not to add these things that people have literally been asking for for years.

And arbitrarily leaves out turn-by-turn navigation for the iPhone 4. The last two major iOS updates just feel like playing catch up on Apple's behalf. They have the reputation of being an innovator yet they are being left behind in both terms of software and hardware development. While I don't see myself as replacing my iPhone 4 anytime soon, if I had to do it today then it would be more than likely I'd be going with a Galaxy SIII or One-X. The iPhone 5 is going to have to be something pretty special to not just catch up, but overtake the top of the line Android offerings.

[–]squired 1 point2 points ago

Especially seeing as a single Android handset, the Droid Maxx, is now outselling the iPhone on the nation's largest carrier, Verizon.

It is starting to look like the old Mac v. Pc saga all over again.

Apple needs to pull its head out of its ass and start innovating again. Playing catchup with Android and Microsoft isn't going to end well.

[–]ionian 1 point2 points ago

thanks for taking the time to pick apart my answer for one point and totally ignore the other points I brought up. widgets are one of the things I mentioned, not all of it.

most of all I'm just disappointed because in the past they have made major upgrades to the OS with each version, this one, not so much.

I love iPhones, like I said I've had one for 4 years, but I can't help but be scared that apple is becoming complacent.

for an iPhone 4 user iOS 6 doesn't offer much. turn by turn navigation isn't even supported (seriously?! there have been apps that do this for years) and if they want me to upgrade they aren't doing a whole lot (as of today) to entice me.

From a designer perspective there is absolutely no reason to go try and change the UI. It works, people know it and those who don't find it intuitive.

Don't fix what isn't broken.

[–]squired 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did go Android. From BB to iOS to Android.

I loved all the phones. For technical individuals though, Iphone built a better phone than BB at the time, and now Android has passed iOS.

I was really looking forward to some sort of leap for the iPhone5. It doesn't look like that'll happen and with Android about to get another upgrade, Google seems to be leaving Apple behind. It'll be interesting to see how WP8 plays out though.

[–]holymadness 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why pick apart your argument when I can just talk to the big picture? You listed a bunch of quibbles, some legitimate and some not, to which my response is still: there is no better smartphone platform today than the iPhone and iOS, despite its shortcomings and flaws.

Are you going to switch to Android and have your bloatware-infested operating system be obsolete in 6 months because carriers refuse to release updates? Are you going to switch to WP7 and lose out on tens of thousands of apps? Blackberry, maybe?

I also own an iPhone 4 and am very annoyed that turn-by-turn navigation won't be supported. Hell, I'm annoyed that I don't have Siri. But I'm not going to cut off my nose to spite my face and switch to an inferior product as a result. These tactics to force obsolescence are admittedly frustrating, but your threats are about as convincing as all those people who declared they'd move to Canada if G.W. Bush won the presidency.

[–]whiskeytab 3 points4 points ago

I never threatened anything, I said I would most likely move away from ios, which is true. around the time the new iPhone comes out I will be in the market for a new phone and will not be on a contract.

with ios 6 out of the bag and not impressing me, all that's left is the new phone itself, and IF it doesn't impress me then yes the result that is MOST LIKELY is that I won't buy it and hence would buy a non-iOS phone.

dont see how this affects you personally or why you're trying so hard to shoot down the other options.

I've been using an Android phone for the past few years. I'm thinking of switching to an iPhone soon.

Android users constantly bitch about unwanted stock apps even worse than iOS users due to carriers and manufacturers adding extra crap.

I will miss home screen widgets, it's very nice to be able to have whatever info I want on display. (I also like being able to organize my apps on the home screen instead of having them stuck flowing from the top left.)

A lot of this isn't in stock Android either - you go into the messages app to respond to 'em, silent hours are a paid 3rd-party app.

It IS pretty nice to be able to hit the microphone icon next to almost any text input and speak instead of type.

I have bought a lot more apps for my iPad than my Nexus One. Most Android apps are kinda ugly IMHO. It doesn't help that every other major OS release brings a new skin. Oh yeah, and don't expect to update your OS. Ever. If you're lucky then one update MIGHT trickle through the modifications of your carrier and your phone's manufacturer. But you will probably have to root your device and install Cyanogenmod or some other homebrew distribution of the OS to stay up to date.

tl;dr: android and iOS both have some major gaps in functionality.

  • What obligation does Apple have to overhaul their UI? They've updated it in some ways. What if many of their users don't want it to change?
  • Quick access is one thing, but don't you think widgets will just be unnecessary battery drainage?
  • Is it really hard to go into the Messaging app?
  • Better folders how? More items? I can't disagree, this would be nice.
  • Lockscreen info would be nice.
  • They aren't dealing with a lot of space for the notification center, what could they improve? I tried thinking of this myself before the conference, but I couldn't think of anything.
  • I agree in removing the stock apps that you don't use, ESPECIALLY Newsstand.
  • See above notification center comment.

If you're looking for all this stuff to be added, maybe you are better suited to Android, or just keep jailbreaking. Personally, I prefer the simple, non-crowded UI and notification center/status bar. But that's me.

[–]whiskeytab 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't really think they're obligated for any of it, but they should at least have the option for a lot of these things. I'm fine with jail breaking, to be honest if I didn't have that option I probably would have moved from ios earlier, but the problem is its not a guaranteed thing. when apple updates the OS they kill the jailbreak, same thing with new phones. if they just added these things in the first place then people wouldn't need or want to jailbreak.

as for any battery issues with the above features, I can do them on my 2 year old iPhone 4 right now with no negative effect so I don't see why they couldnt with newer and better devices

No ethernet on the new MBP? Damn...

[–]staiano 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah it seems their thought is it has thunderbolt and you can get gigabit Ethernet and FireWire adapters.

Maybe they will go old school and include the ethernet adapter in the box but I wouldn't hold our breathes.

[–]vinng86 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The ethernet port was probably too big so they were probably like fuck it, lets just make an adapter instead.

[–]hekati 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't see an optical drive on there either. The lack of ethernet port is sadface, but at least the ethernet adapter is gigabit. The current one for the MacBook Air isn't gigabit, only 100mps. The USB 3, HDMI, and SD card slots make up for it a bit.

Why did you expect it now? The 4S came out less than a year ago.

When and where is the full video going to be posted after the speech is done?

[–]noswagg[S] 0 points1 point ago

they usually post videos on http://www.apple.com/apple-events/ & their YouTube channel, http://youtube.com/apple

[–]microsby29 1 point2 points ago

makes sense. How quick do they normally post?

[–]richworks 0 points1 point ago

Usually a day after the conference..

[–]DoTheDew 1 point2 points ago

[–]richworks 0 points1 point ago

So I'm a little confused. Is the "legacy" MPB the same form factor as the old ones? Does it still have an ethernet port and a CD drive?

[–]pibroch 0 points1 point ago

Yes. Just like the TiBooks when the AlBooks came out.

So they won't announce the iPhone 5 even though it's coming out in September?

[–]DoTheDew 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's coming out most likely in October, and they don't usually announce it more than 2 weeks before it ships.

[–]BCsprfn87 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Point taken. Your right I forgot about the October launch.

[–]Etab 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That would give competitors a lot of time to respond. Also, it wouldn't be great if people held off buying an iPhone for a few months -- most companies want people to buy something now (or as soon as physically possible).

3Gs support but none for 1st gen iPads?

[–]jakebluu 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Can someone answer this?

[–]Etab 1 point2 points ago

Looks like no support for first-gen iPad, most likely because the 3GS is still being sold and the first-gen iPad is not.

I'm betting it's because it has a camera

[–]ebrake 0 points1 point ago

Yet again Apple tells the Professional users to suck it. As we are stuck with the same Apple Pro line that was designed for the G5 processors almost 10 years ago.

Its becoming a joke now that you can get MacPro laptops for $3,000 that out-spec the $5,000 Mac Pro Desktops.

[–]hookguy 0 points1 point ago

13" MBP specs are a bit disappointing :/

[–]The_Justicer 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? Is there anything you can't do with it?

[–]tjamzt 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just compared to the specs of some current 13" windows laptops at this pricepoint, I'd expect them to be better. I don't see why they didnt make it a little thicker and packed some better hardware in there since now there is very little difference between it and the MBA.

[–]The_Justicer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Doesn't really answer my question. Just my opinion, but I think we've gotten to the point where spec comparison is no longer an indicator of quality. All modern computers are incredibly fast, and spec differences are virtually imperceptible to most users.

[–]tjamzt 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well for me It would be lacking in 3D applications like 3Ds max and Maya as well as most modern games. For video rendering and photoshop it will be fine, but It could be much faster.

[–]Pandyballs 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

how?

[–]retrospects -1 points0 points ago

Because it takes forever to receive. Maybe it is just iPhone 4 but even over wifi it is spotty at best.

[–]Pandyballs 21 points22 points ago

I'm guessing that's your connection...I never have any problems with any of my devices

No problems here either. It has worked flawlessly since day one. Super speedy, totally reliable.

[–]retrospects 1 point2 points ago

Both on wifi with full bars and it never works right. I have had to turn it off because I will received them without notification, very VERY delayed, or not at all.

[–]Pandyballs 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

maybe your actual internet connection though?

[–]retrospects 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, trust me everything was all good. I even had tested it with nothing but the phone pulling from the connection on both ends. It is not reliable for me.

[–]tmantran 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pandyballs isn't talking about your phone's connection to your router, but rather your connection to The Internet itself. Have you tried on a different ISP?

[–]retrospects 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have tried via 3G, Public WiFi, my home wifi with all the same results. It is not just my phone it is on both ends.

[–]Brandaman 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Phone issue? It's fine for me too

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never had any issues with iMessage.

[–]TheAwakened 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's never been a problem with me or my friends, ever. I've used it on 3G connections of Vodafone and 3, and on a few Wi-Fi connections as well. It's more likely something on your end.

[–]retrospects 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Like i said it is on both ends, perhaps there is something screwy. It just does not work for me. I have unlimited text anyway so i really don't mind.

[–]TheAwakened 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If it's a problem on your end, it'll reflect on both ends.

For example, when you send an iMessage to someone and your Internet connection screws up, the other person won't get it ASAP.

[–]retrospects 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That makes a lot of sense. Either my router or Time Warner sucks balls (or both)

[–]tresonce 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it blows that your notifications and unread messages dont sync between devices. Did i miss that or is this fixed now?

[–]rarisgod 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your Apple ID will now unify all addresses you can receive your messages (and FaceTime calls) at. So you sign in with your Apple ID on any device and you'll receive all the same messages. I'm glad they did it this way, it means everything will be synced for sure.

[–]retrospects 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think messages will now be linked but I am not sure. I know that you can receive and respond to an imessage on any device though so that is cool.
