Do you have plans for Saturday night? You'll probably want some beer after the game and there's plenty of good places to have one.

That might be a challenge on a Saturday night, fines are pretty steep if a bar gets caught serving underage, not to mention possible penalties to you.

While I'd advise against trying your luck anywhere with a security guard, it does seem like a waste to come all the way to Australia and not drink. If you really want to, I'd avoid anywhere dance-heavy like the plague, as they tend to be popular with first year uni students and so consequently are tighter than a hummingbird's cloaca when it comes to security.

If you're staying with somebody the inner suburbs of Melbourne have literally hundreds of small, slightly out of the way bars where you'd probably be ok having a drink or two without attracting too much attention. Just don't go by yourself.

Just so you know, elephantbox is not the OP. So he hasn't come from anywhere. So if he misses out on a drink then he can probably just try again next month.

I would suggest Sister Bella off Drewery Lane. Very rarely see security there, but it's kinda small and shabby looking. Staff are pretty ace.

I can not possibly endorse this or your wishes to go out as it is against the law, but..... there are some simple strategies for drinking at bars underage that i personally knuckled down and used without trouble right up until my 18th birthday (keep in mind I was a girl, so that undoubtedly helped):

Do not go drinking on your own, or with other underage friends. Go with older friends if possible (mid twenties). Sit somewhere out of the way, preferably out of the line of sight from the main bar where drinks will be purchased. Have your older friends buy your drinks from the bar for you. This is a normal thing that mates do for each other, but will also stop the potential for an ID confrontation once you are in . Go to small out of the way bars (do not even try to attempt going to any of the places that would be typically popular for people your age, like clubs or live music venues) If you want to go to a busier bar, go early. Like 3/4/5pm. Door staff often don't start until it gets dark. So if a bar usually has a bouncer, that may only come on after a certain time. Once your in, your in. Any interactions you do have with door staff or bar staff, be friendly and confident. Eye contact is fine, so is a smile. And if things are going south, don't wait to be told to leave, just get up and go yourself.

That, or wait a month, like a man.

You should teach me (a chef) about this Canadian bacon i hear about, and far more importantly maple bacon! or just come drink my beer, both are good options...or both...

I actually love organic maple syrup. but i am a cook at the Pancake Parlour. People asking for "no maple" on their meals, only to have waiters put it on drives me up the wall. because it need to be recooked :(

we import organic maple, but we also make our own.

12? ltrs of water

18.7kg sugar

2?kg glucose

175ml maple extract.

[–]beerxedge 0 points1 point ago

I'm probably in the same boat but in November. I have an opportunity to get sponsored by a steakhouse I was running for the past 5 months in the CBD but the menu hasn't changed in 6 years, nor will it for the 4 years I'd be roped into it. Such a hard thing to come across! Either way, enjoy this city while you can. Its fucking epic.

[–]soi812 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had a sponsorship but then I quit the position where I was working. Had a bit of a falling out with the two owners. It's hard to leave that place as to how good it was and what I was doing/learning but I needed to leave for my sanity.

I'm not looking at kitchen gigs anymore but corporate. I don't think I really want to cook professionally anymore.

Too bad you left on bad terms, I would have gotten you to push my resume for me haha. The industry has taken its toll on me too, but at the end of the day I still love what I do. It got me over here, no? Mind you im taking a huge step back and helping to run a pub over here in Mount Hotham (a 5 hour drive from the city) but that means I can ride some shit snow again!

[–]forthemaddie 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure that you have to say that by canadian law, Hey could i ask a huge favour. could you give me a few tip on maple bacon, i wish to serve it on my menu but i'd like it to be true to the canadian way! thanks in advance!

[–]niksko3167 2 points3 points ago

I was under the impression that Canadian bacon was close to Aussie bacon, and that American bacon is something different entirely.

[–]forthemaddie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm totally unsure, from different chefs i've herd different things?

[–]l3wi 0 points1 point ago

I live with some french canadians on exchange. Apparently its is worlds apart. More fat if i remember correctly.

[–]InfallibleDogbert 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Supposedly American bacon is "Belly bacon" which is fattier and Australian bacon is "Back bacon" which is supposed to be tastier and less grisly.

I argued with someone in r/keto about it the other day, because to me, their bacon (American) looked the same as Coles bacon.

[–]beedogshappy birthday, spray. i'm disappointed in you. 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

american bacon == streaky bacon (without rind) in australia, more or less.

[–]Generique[S] 2 points3 points ago

but notice the 9 digits.

"Internationally the first 0 is replaced by the +61 country code (e.g. +61 2 xxxx xxxx for NSW or +61 4xx xxx xxx for a mobile number). Some numbers beginning with a 1 may be dialled without any replacement. (see below) There has been careful planning to avoid clashing with 01x numbers in this case." [source]

HOWEVER this is also a ridiculous coincidence because I do go to school around there

[–]illeatyourheart 4 points5 points ago

when you're dialing, texting or giving out mobile numbers in Australia: include the 0 at the start.

i don't know much about caffeinated tea, but there's a bit of a caffeinated coffee scene going on in melbourne. some of the places even have some serious tea as well! if you're close to the city there are a number of quite good places if you're interested

as for football, there are 2 matches in melbourne on sunday, the others are interstate. the one at the mcg starts at 110 (i live pretty much next door so i might join you for the last quarter), otherwise there's one at etihad at 440

Best I can offer is to have to come over and vacuum my house since I'm having a 1year old, 3yo, 9yo and 5 adults over for lunch on Sunday; it's gonna be messy.

Otherwise, I'd happily take you out for coffee/drinks if you have a spare morning/evening. I love drinking partners. I bet we could get a few redditors out too! I think this travel thing is awesome, and I'd be honoured to be a part!
