Wow, thanks for the tip! As stated in the video description, the movie is now public domain, and is thus available for download:

http://www.archive.org/details/M_

They have plenty of bandwidth, I'm downloading the MPEG right now at 3 MB/s.

M is fantastic the use of sound and silence at such a pivotal time in film making was great throughout the movie.

I like to compare it to Avatar in the use of 3D and the early days of sound. How Avatar tried to use 3D as a device to propel the imagery instead of a gimmick to sell tickets.

[–]ryanspeck 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To make it more accessible to U.S. audiences. Not that anyone cared, really. It was pretty much the same. It's great to see Tim Roth in anything, but the German actors were better as the tormetors, Arno Frisch in particular. I need to rewatch the U.S. version just to get a better feel for it.

Check out anything by Werner Herzog and you'll be good to go. I highly recommend Aguirre: The Wrath of God, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, Fitzcarraldo, Nosferatu or Woyzeck. Also look up some of Fritz Lang's early work before he moved to America, like M and Metropolis.

Just watched The Baader Meinhof Complex and liked it a lot. The version I saw had really poor subtitles, though. To the point that it actually misrepresented some political statements the characters made.

I also really liked: Black Box BRD (like the above about the Baader-Meinhoff group), Aimée und Jaguar (about a lesbian couple in Berlin during the Nazi era; it's also a very pretty movie), Jenseits der Stille (about a girl who grows up with deaf parents), Männerpension (comedy), Stalingrad, Schtonk! (funny satire about the Hitler Diaries hoax), Kleine Haie (comedy), Herbstmilch (about the life of a Bavarian farm life), Hitlerjunge Salomon, Die weiße Rose (about the Scholl resistance group), Der Name der Rose (movie after Umbero Eco's famous book, historical).

Post-war German films: Gegen die Wand, Soul Kitchen, Elementarteilchen, Die Welle, Das Experiment and for comedy check the Loriot movies. Pre war: Nosferatu (!!!), Metropolis, Triumph des Willens (major inspiration for Star Wars). And for the fucked up shit: Uwe Boll's Amoklauf, Jörg Buttgereit's Nekromantik.

[–]neraeloc 0 points1 point ago

Triumph des Willens (major inspiration for Star Wars)

There were a lot of major influences for the Star Wars films, I think using major is kind of silly at that point. Not to harp on you, just hear a lot of people say this.

[–]xX_p0laris_Xx 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think it was actually a "German film" as much as it was set in Germany. I swore it was called Swingers but I'll be damned if I can find it.

It was about these kids who liked to swing dance back when it was all but illegal to do so in east germany.

One of the kids ended up joining German army and uncle Tom'd the rest of the kids.

I recall it being a very good movie... I just wish I could remember the name. Hopefully someone else can help us both out with it.

[–]graspinghandsandfeet 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's called Swing Kids. I didn't like it very much, but that was mostly because I can't stand when actors pretend to have a German accent in their English to make their characters more "authentic."

[–]xX_p0laris_Xx 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That was most definitely it. Thanks. As for the fake German accents, I'll admit that I probably couldn't tell the difference.

[–]ekki -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Would these films be interesting for a person that does not understand German? What are the differences between German cinema and Western cinema?

[–]nessi 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Uhm, less pyrotechnics?

Seriously: Not sure what you mean by Western vs. German, but modern Germany is pretty "westernized", if not strictly geographically then certainly culturally (Yes, there are debates about this topic, but it's Monday morning, and I have work to do;)). But of course German movies deal with German topics and German sentiments a lot of the time. You will find many very serious films about the Third Reich, movies about the Rote Armee Fraktion deal with Germany's domestic terrorism and so on. But there also some really good comedies, with a sense of humor that of course might have nuances that don't exactly match what you are used to. That doesn't mean they can't be interesting to you, if you are open to it, and (good) subtitles will help you get over the language hump. Give it a try!

If by "West" you mean the US, see my first sentence. ;)
