Followed by the most harrowing moment of the film: Forrest at Jenny's grave. I break down every time.

[–]MuNansen 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, it was rough. Though for me the most crushing moment was the "But is he...is he...smart or is he...?" The one moment where we see any hint of his emotions towards his shortcomings.

That scene is always jostling with Bubba's death for the position of saddest scene in the movie. The remorse in Forrest's voice when he says, "Bubba was gonna be a shrimp boat captain, instead he died right by that river in Vietnam." Manly tears are shed every time.

The youtube video where the guys have a pet lion when they are kids but have to give it up when it gets big but then they go and visit it again in Africa when they are adults and the lion remembers them and they all hug.

Everytime Sigur Ros starts playing, I start to tear up. When Queen Bitch starts playing, I have the biggest smile on and everything is good. Probably true for me and most of Wes's films.

A bunch of my friends and I had a girls night one winter several years ago, and we watched that movie. I have never felt so happy and alive and in love with the world, and I would have never thought a movie would make me feel that way.

And now I get to watch Andrew Lincoln try to survive the zombie apocalypse.

Me too, me too! I think mainly because it's not an unrealistic fairy tale romance movies we are often subjected to. It's a movie about realistic "love" stories that happen in everyday life to many people: finding friendship in unlikely person, falling in love with strangers/people you're not supposed to love/people with a lot of differences, cheating on your loved ones and fixing the relationship, etc. Simple yet beautiful stories like that.

I love this dialogue:

Daniel: Well, because I thought it would be something worse.

Sam: [incredulous] Worse than the total agony of being in love?

Daniel: Oh. No, you're right. Yeah, total agony.

I seriously can't upvote this enough. Tim Burton is not one of my favorite directors, but that is easily one of the best films I have ever seen. Every scene touches me deeply and it is incredibly well acted and well written. Plus, holy shit is Jessica Lange hot.

50/50. I just saw it recently so it came to mind. I went in expecting another Knocked Up or Forgetting Sarah Marshall type comedy but was pleasantly surprised with a thought-provoking, feel good flick.

[–]InfinitePower 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The whole thing just seemed so unbelievably pretentious to me. Amelie was manipulative to those around her, pissing people off and being infuriatingly annoying throughout the entire film. It carried this air of incredible smugness with it that I just hated, enormously.

[–]c_megalodon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a different take of the film but I think it's a sound opinion. You can look at it in that way. Amelie herself are doing these "good" things without thinking whether or not the people around her agree with it. It is a fantasy feel-good movie, I don't see it happening in real life. It takes a great deal to change people's life to the better.

I wrote this in another thread:

Little Miss Sunshine taught me the importance of pursuing your dreams/goals and enjoying, learning, and having fun from the process of doing that. Even if your dreams shatter in the middle of the way, there are people & things around you to raise you back up. There are more than one way to reach your dreams.

I love how even though the characters' dreams are shattered throughout the movie, they have each others in the end and don't let everything put them down any longer.

I was really disappointed with the ending of that film. It felt like it was going to be an anti-romcom and then it kind of ditched the groundbreaking feel for a unsatisfying cop out. At least thats how I felt.

[–]ezekielziggy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was more of a coming of age film.

[–]MadCervantes 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can get behind that. I guess I just liked how it pointed out the over romanctization of people that happens in a relationship. At that time in my life, I had also come out of a bad relationship, and I was really grasping for a "I don't need the perfect relationship. I can be independent and learn to live on my own" kind of thing. And I think that's true, and the kind of thing more rom coms could talk about. But yeah, I can get what you are saying.

I'm not sure why you were downvoted. This movie always makes me feel, if not exactly "happy," at least incredibly free, okay with myself, and weirdly anticipatory, like events in my life become so interesting that it doesn't matter if they're challenging. Weird, but definitely good, feeling.

Such an utter celebration of the victory of human intelligence, set to the triumphance of Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra. This may sound silly to everyone, but as a girl, watching Pride and Prejudice makes me hopeful, happy, encouraged and feeling floaty. No matter when I watch it. The period music also makes me melt and usually picks me up when I listen to it. ok, not to be the weird one in this group, but Rocky IV. i literally can not watch that movie without a giant grin and end it feeling like everything's going to be ok. i've even noticed a slight swagger in my step after watching it. the only exception to this being when apollo dies, which crushes me like a little girl every...single...time

Surprisingly Wristcutters: A Love Story. At first it's a depressing flick which slowly turns into a pretty happy story making me glad to be alive despite what gets thrown my way.

City of God. As a Brazilian, great to see an all-is-well-that-ends-well situation in a place like the film's setting. Not to mention it had the greatest cast of characters I have ever seen.

I agree. The raw emotion at the end combined with the fantastic cinematography is really moving. I didn't immediately realize he was seeing his future son, and when I finally got it, it was great.

Seabiscuit. Not just because it's such a tremendous story about the triumph and redemption of an underdog horse, but because the movie so seamlessly ties in the rise and redemption of the nation in the face of the great depression. This quote by the narrator gets me every time... "For the first time in a long time, someone cared. For the first time in a long time, you were no longer alone."

Punch-Drunk Love by PT Anderson. I had no idea it was supposed to be a rom-com and I had just seen my first PTA movies like There Will Be Blood/Boogie Nights/magnolia, so I was expecting a graphic murder with a bowling pin or heavy descent into drug use and deep depression at every corner. Then Adam Sandler (who I hate in everything since Billy Madison) did the greatest performance of his career. Playing the most misunderstood/socially-retarded person to ever live, and being manipulated by terrible people (sisters, phone-sex blackmailers), he just takes control of the situation in the final scene with Philip Seymour Hoffman. I dont like typical rom-coms, but ive never felt so shamelessly good and hopeful about relationships after seeing this movie.

On a side note, What The Bleep Do We Know is very misleading and a lot of the science is just wrong.

Source Code. It was by far one of the best movies that I've seen this year. I was expecting initially to be just another sci-fi flick that will come and go without much to remember from it. But to my surprise they've actually managed to give an emotion of hope and joy. Seeing the main character getting a second chance at life, made me realize that I should be more thankful of what I have right now and to be thankful that I'm alive. Very good movie.

My Life Without Me

It's actually a very sad movie about a young mother & wife who is terminally ill. But it made me happy because she decides to do these things for people around her and herself before she dies. She makes decisions that save her family from being mournful about her illness, thus enabling herself and these people to keep enjoying life.
