If I come in and shout "REDDIT!", will you stand up and do the same so I don't look like the only retard?

No No, you must covertly go up to each person in the bar and say "Reddit" and wait for the the Official Reddit response "The Narwhal Bacons at Midnight"

[–]bib4tuna 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Come on, you know that the official reddit spy passgreeting is "It's orange" to which the replier confirms "No, it's red"

I'd already have to be piss-myself drunk before I said that.

[–]Justavian 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, no, no! You have to start with "The Narwhal Bacons at Midnight". If you go up to random people and say "Reddit", you'll just get a bunch of "Have i read what?" responses. Where's the fun in that?

I've not had bacon in 4 months :-(
For some reason it's hard to get out in Turkey.

What's turkey bacon?

[–]taintedhero 11 points12 points ago

turkey bacon - bacon made from turkey.

Turkey bacon - bacon found in turkey.

But it's still enjoyable, if you get high quality turkey bacon, that is.

[–]robeph 2 points3 points ago

It is not so good, yet is better than Turk bacon, which is bacon made of Turks.

[–]CraigTorso 1 point2 points ago

Turkey bacon is turkey cured as if it were bacon.

It's only redeeming quality is that it doesn't taste much like turkey, sadly, it doesn't taste much like bacon either.

The old Bellevue building is now a men's shelter. They aren't allowed in during the day, so they just mill around the area. Most of them don't bother anyone, but I get a decent amount of cat-calls. One time some guy said "White girls like black cock" to me.

I would love to be there, but it wont happen.

Let us know what kind of beer they offer. I always wanted to know what a neighborhood pub in England would serve.

In the US it you will find some of the crappiest beer at local bars and pubs. These beers will include one or more of the big 3 breweries some of the fancier ones will have Guinness.

Enjoy yourselves fellas.

[–]CraigTorso 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

in the UK it very much depends on the landlord/brewers who run the pub. Some local pubs get wonderful beers sourced both locally and nationally, and other just serve horrific factory produced fighting juice.

Personally I'm very much of the opinion that a CAMRA* endorsed free house, or a good Fuller's tied pub guarantees you a good night, but I am an ageing beer snob

*Campaign for Real Ale (The bearded defenders of the traditional British pint of ale)

[–]NiceGuyMike 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It also much depends are the owner of a local bar here in the States. The problem is that most owners take the ea$y route. Sometimes you find a place that cares, but there aren't any in my immediate area.

I'm a huge fan of Belgian ales, but every now and then I get my hands on a good English Ale and I wonder how I ever lived without it. Old Speckled Hen (in the can not bottle) is a great example. The key is how fresh they are and that can be a problem with imports.

[–]CraigTorso 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Old Speckled Hen isn't quite the beer it used to be. It's still pleasant, but it used to be lovely. Today I'm treating myself to a bottle each of Fuller's 1845 and ESB, which I believe to be near the pinnacle of British beer brewing.

I'd almost hope those two aren't being exported, mainly because they're hard enough to find in the UK without foreign types half-inching our limited supply. On the other hand, anyone who wants to import Carling Black Label should be given all the assistance they require

[–]NiceGuyMike 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Fuller's are both are easily available; especially the ESB. They are tough to get fresh because they tend to sit on store shelves for long periods of time. I see the London Porter all over the place, and it moves very slow. I tried it once and it seems good, but it also seemed not so good. I chalk that up to a freshness issue so I'm not going to pass judgment. Porter is an example of a great English style when done well. A few US brewers do porters justice; many don't.

My favorite English brewery is Samuel Smith (forgive sp). The Tady Porter is wondrous; the lagers, both the Organic and "Pure" versions are the best general lagers I know of; and I always wait enthusiastically for the Winter Warmer.

I know what beers I'll be looking for this weekend ;)

[–]chucks86 0 points1 point ago

I did not know that. Over here if you buy an underage girl a drink you could end up on the sex offenders list. Do you guys have the mugshot magazines at your convenience stores where they list criminals in the area (I think they may all be just registered sex offenders)? That just sprung up around here some time last year.

[–]keyboardsmash 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not so far as I know. I don't think I could legally get any adult to buy me one, someone in my family probably has to buy it for me. But I don't reckon they're too fussy as long as whoever isn't obviously trying to get me drunk.

[–]chucks86 0 points1 point ago

We have somewhat-similar laws around some of the parts of the US: a minor can consume alcohol in their home if the parent/guardian bought it and supervises. Minors can even brew their own beer (just not consume anything they make.)

I haven't spoken to an Englishman (gender-neutral) since the inception of the Brixton Pound, and hadn't heard anything about it since the post on reddit to vote David Bowie as one of the bill-faces. I was just thinking about it earlier today and learned that he wasn't on any of them. Were you disappointed?

Note: My UK geography is worse than my US geography, so I just assume you're all one city and everyone knows everyone else. Another weird thing, even though I know England's an island, I can't picture any beaches being there.

England isn't an island. The UK is. There are beaches, but only insane people go on them without coats.

Haha, David Bowie. No way would he ever have been seriously considered for being on money. But now I hear of it, I'm upset that Freddie Mercury isn't on the £20.

We can consume alcohol at home from age 5. The law's there to stop people giving babies spoons of whiskey to make it sleep. We're more lax about alcohol in the UK for sure. There are plenty of places that don't ID, ever.

I'd love for Freddie Mercury to be on currency too.

I just learned my mental map of the UK is completely backwards. I pictured England on the top-left, Wales on the right, and both it and Scotland separated.... Can you guess the subject I was never good at?

My mom gave me a spoonful of whiskey to get me to sleep and I turned out just fine. (Don't look at my comment history.)

No, that's really, "I'm god damn insane, but am telling you I'm not."

All of them. Every city I've visited, I've looked for the tallest building to pee off of.

In some areas the police drop in spotter cards of locals who have been barred by the courts from drinking in pubs because of an ASBO.

Was like that in Oxford when I worked there.

Girls get into pups and clubs without fail near me. My cousin has been out in town most weeks, since she was about 15. Me, well I still get ID'd at 18, even though I look old for my age…and the bouncers/bar staff all know me!! It's fucking ridiculous watching 20 tiny girls walking into a bar with the bouncers presumably guessing their age by their bust size, then me getting stopped and sometimes even being refused because I can't exactly remember my postcode…at 1am after god knows how many beers and shots.

Anyhow, I would help you out, I really would, but there are tons of underage girls I can take advantage of, so I won't have the time, sorry…

God damn. I hope those underage girls give you herpes, sir. And then make you listen to Miley Cyrus.
