Meanwhile in the Swiss front, two poodles cuddle each other.

Sirwootalot 53 points54 points 2 months ago[-]

If there's any more cards, Chile will qualify for the Yu-Gi-Oh! cup.

jlembeck 5 points6 points 2 months ago[-]

I'm pretty sure they're REALLY close to mana burn.

chameche 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

I missed the red card. What happened?

moocowmeow 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

haha, see 90% of the rest of this thread :) It was a second yellow.

fischermansfriend 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

Estrada had a yellow card, and then, right before Spains second goal, he and Torres happened to bump a little into each other, and the ref thought he had kicked him down.

danielbln 12 points13 points 2 months ago[-]

He received a pretty clear warning beforehand, he knew that he was one bad glance away from red.

romcabrera 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

Bielsa should have replaced him.

night_owl 5 points6 points 2 months ago[-]

he and Torres happened to bump a little into each other,

That is not at all an accurate description of what happened.

I agree that the contact appeared to be totally accidental and not typically worthy of a yellow card, but there are some things to take into consideration.

  • First of all, Torres was looking the other way and sprinting into the box to get into position to receive a cross, so he didn't even see Estrada coming from behind.

  • Also, he was clipped on the heel while sprinting, which would take down 999/1000 players in that circumstance so this is not a case of Torres embellishing minor contact: he went down hard on a trip from behind.

  • Estrada had already received a verbal warning from the ref after his 1st yellow card.

  • When a player is running into a potential scoring position (right on the edge of the box running forward) gets taken down from behind, the ref doesn't really have much choice to book the defender even if it didn't appear malicious as in this case.

I think the ref did the right thing, even if it was a harsh decision against Chile.

towelrod 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

Wow, I can't believe you are getting downvotes. That's what a well reasoned, informed opinion gets you on reddit I guess.

deondrit 17 points18 points 2 months ago[-]

After this looked a promising match of equal strength in the first 15 minutes, now Spain live up to their promise ...

While I'm writing ... a red! What's going on?

wrestle4228 6 points7 points 2 months ago[-]

Second yellow, I believe. Tough one for Chile, as Torres went down pretty easily

elezeta 20 points21 points 2 months ago[-]

Nice Chile going for the match with 10 players. Great attitude!!

speek [S] 14 points15 points 2 months ago[-]

Look at how far forward Chile pressures! I love it.

gragoon 4 points5 points 2 months ago[-]

Only problem with pressuring far forward is it makes it necessay at times to make fouls to prevent the opponent from break-aways... and that leads to more cards than usual.

Mattastrophe 4 points5 points 2 months ago[-]

I love how Chile is everywhere on the field. That pressure's insane. I don't think it'll be enough though.

lunacraz 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

attacking soccer / possession soccer like that usually calls for a high press to try to get possession back, which is why counter attacks work so well against this sort of soccer

barcelona is a good example of a very high press

NARVO90 8 points9 points 2 months ago[-]

Wow that just got really boring.

chwedl 12 points13 points 2 months ago[-]

Am I right in thinking that if Spain top the group then the only way they would face Brazil is if both teams got to the final?

danielbln 12 points13 points 2 months ago[-]

Which is not entirely impossible.

chwedl 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

That is a final I would love to see. (Sorry England, I think you will beat Germany on Sunday but will get knocked out by Argentina in the quarters).

Chewyboognish 6 points7 points 2 months ago[-]

Before you guys start thinkin Bravo is a bad goalie I direct you to this something this incredible takes some serious skill and thats what Bravo has. Not to mention that up untill this game he hasn't given up a single goal.

That said this isn't the first time a great keeper fucked up. Robert Green anyone?

Hell Rene Higuta who just recently had a thread made about him. The scorpion kick goalie. An amazing player BUT this has happened to him TWICE. The most famous instant being this.

Great goalies fuck up too ya know.

UnnamedPlayer 6 points7 points 2 months ago[-]

Yeah goalies get too much flak for every little screwup irrespective of how well they have been performing the rest of the game/s. The risk of screwing up goes exponentially up as you move away from the front line:

  • If a striker fucks up, it's just a missed opportunity and while you may hold your head in your hands, you won't exactly curse him for it unless it's something like what that Nigerian striker did in the other match.
  • If a mid-fielder screws up, he gets some flak since it usually results in an attack but there is still a line of defense which saves him from major embarrassments most of the time.
  • If a defender makes a mistake up then he gets a lot of heat and is under pressure for the rest of the match since at that position, a wrong pass/clearance immediately puts the goal at risk.
  • Now if the keeper screws up then he is blasted to hell because he is the last line of defense and in most cases, any major mistake from the keeper ends up in a goal or at least makes him look like a total tool. The margin of error is negligible and the results of the mistakes are not pretty, which makes it even harder for him.

Chewyboognish 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

It's a tough position to play. I mean after you fuck up that bad your nerves have to be shot. He really kept his cool in the 2nd half and they played an amazing game with just 10 men.

Rossoneri 5 points6 points 2 months ago[-]

Before anybody comments, the ice pack on Torres's leg means nothing. It's common practice to ice down players, especially those returning from injuries.

jdsmx 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

He who gains nourishment from destroying world cup campaigns...See how powerful he looks now?

realmadrid2727 34 points35 points 2 months ago[-]

You guys need to chill.

  • Torres didn't dive. He wasn't fouled, it was accidental, but it wasn't a dive. Did he milk it? Sure, but that's not the same as a dive. Running full speed looking ahead he couldn't have known the guy didn't intentionally drop him, so the thespian in him kicked in. The acting isn't cool, but it wasn't a dive so stop calling it that.

  • It wasn't a straight red, it was a yellow.

  • Estrada got away with what should've been a definite card like a minute before that, so call it a karmic yellow card.

  • The first goal was awesome, not because it was particularly strategic or beautiful, but because that goalie is retarded and I love when a team takes full advantage of another team's bad move and it works out for them, regardless of what team I'm supporting.

  • Spain isn't playing as cohesively as they're known to. However, Chile seems to be on this "let's see how badly we can fuck this up" mode which works out for Spain.

Vitalstatistix 9 points10 points 2 months ago[-]

I'd argue that the first goal was a beautiful goal because it was pretty damn difficult. Villa was running almost full speed and one times it from almost 40 yards out on the sideline, over the defenders to one hop into the back corner of the net. That takes a lot of skill and composure.

lunacraz 5 points6 points 2 months ago[-]

40 yards? id say almost 50-60

Vitalstatistix 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

Watch it again and pause; he's about 40 yards by the naked eye. There's absolutely no way he's 60 as that would be well past the half way mark on Spain's side of the field.

UnnamedPlayer 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

They showed it in their high tech 3D replay thingymajingy and it was shown as 45+ yards.

Vitalstatistix 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

I'll concede 45, but it's impossible for him to be 60 yards out, and anything over 50 seems like a real stretch.

night_owl 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

but that doesn't take into consideration the lateral distance (side to side) away from the goal, only the vertical distance (end to end). The shot traveled diagonally from near the sideline, so even if it was only ~40 yds away from the endline, it was still ~20 yds wide of the goal when he shot. The path of the ball was probably around 50 yds.

Vitalstatistix 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

Yup, very true, didn't take that into distance consideration. Great goal no matter what really.

night_owl 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

No disputing that. Gotta be an early nominee for goal of the World Cup.

Tetu 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

I thought the first goal was the best one of this world cup so far.

derMaterMort 5 points6 points 2 months ago[-]

Well stated.

SmokyMcBongster 6 points7 points 2 months ago[-]

Upvoted for truth. I'd say it was a half-foul with embellishment. Second yellow definitely deserved from the blatant foul minutes before... first goal was funny, second goal was sweet, and Chile just had a nice goal. Lucky deflection, but goal nonetheless.

NoTalentAssClown 3 points4 points 2 months ago[-]

Baukelien 5 points6 points 2 months ago[-]

WOAH! blows my mind.

I was sure there was contact when watching tv.

trocar 6 points7 points 2 months ago[-]

I was sure there was not contact until after watching this gif.

Look at the right knee of the man in red. It hits the right foot of the man in blue. Like SmokyMcBongster says, it projects the right foot of Torres onto his left calf. I'm not sure the rest is embellishment now.

I sort of feel better, because I didn't expect that from Torres.

Areign 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

he still acted like he got shot. im still unimpressed

SmokyMcBongster 3 points4 points 2 months ago[-]

In another angle, you can clearly see the tiniest contact. What really makes Torres go down is that bit of contact sends his right foot into the back of his left calf... The rest is embellishment.

towelrod 0 points1 point 2 months ago[-]

It was definitely a foul. Watch this angle:

http://img12.abload.de/img/torreslentocm2x.gif

You can clearly see the Chilean's knee hit Torres on the foot, which knocks his foot into his other leg as he runs full speed. There is no way on earth to stay up after something like that.

deondrit 5 points6 points 2 months ago[-]

CLEAR yellow ... and that guy gave Cahill a straight red. If he likes cards, he should at least be consistent.

bento_box 4 points5 points 2 months ago[-]

This is the first time I've watched Chile play and despite their mistakes and bad luck this match, I'm very impressed with their style of play. They are quick and clever on the ball, they apply pressure up the field, and they only play 3 at the back. Count me in as a fan.

UnnamedPlayer 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

Torres did not dive. He tripped him accidentally.

Stop seeing dives everywhere!!! I know people dive but not everything is a dive. Torres does not dive.

n__ 5 points6 points 2 months ago[-]

He didn't dive but he did embellish it after falling.

seanmharcailin 6 points7 points 2 months ago[-]

he was tripped, but he played that shit up. no reason for him to hit the grass. play it up, sure, but it was incidental, terribly LIGHT, and not worth the drama he showed the ref.

CarnePopsicle 7 points8 points 2 months ago[-]

Apparently you had a nice trip, Torres. Goddammit.

seanmharcailin 3 points4 points 2 months ago[-]

"that is a nonsense. that is a nonsense"

come on chile- you can totally come back from 2 and down to 10. that was a crappy call by the ref, but he made it and you have 50 minutes to show spain that you're worth the fight.

P-Nuts 14 points15 points 2 months ago* [-]

Yes, Estrada was extremely lucky to get away without a second yellow for the challenge a few minutes before he was sent off, so it's hard to feel too sorry for him getting the card for a rather soft booking.

Rossoneri 6 points7 points 2 months ago[-]

It wasn't a red, it was a second yellow.

Namaha 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

And then instead of getting back up he just laid there like a fool :/

UnnamedPlayer 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

deondrit 15 points16 points 2 months ago[-]

speek [S] 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

I predict this will be the best game of the group stages. Maybe not as dramatic as the US-Algeria game, but probably a better game overall. Spain needs to win, Chile can't afford to lose. Both teams attack like crazy but neither give up easy goals either. Fantastic!

walen 0 points1 point 2 months ago[-]

I'm Spanish, but just as we didn't deserve losing against the Swiss, I don't think Chile deserves to be losing 2-0, and that red card is very unclear. I think the referee is a bit sided.

And as I write this, Chile scores! Now that makes things a little more fair :)

Rossoneri 4 points5 points 2 months ago[-]

You were outplayed, hence you deserved the loss. You shouldn't have lost, but you did deserve it.

peteyH 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

chwedl 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

Red card? Really?

bobsmo 4 points5 points 2 months ago[-]

that ref had enough of Estrada. He got away with a foul 1 minute earlier.

UnnamedPlayer 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

Argh.. it was not a red card, it was a second yellow and that's why he was sent out.

Flapps 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

Agreed - once you're on a yellow, you've got to be damn careful with your feet.

Resilience 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

Was that a dive just now? It was, wasn't it?
