I always use VLC as default. You should get a choice when you install your PC which player you want to use, like they did with browsers.

Until then, use Ninite to easily install basic programs for computers. It's the first thing I do when booting up a computer for the first time (unless it's an OEM computer, in which case PC Decrapifier comes before Ninite).

You should update drivers and get antivirus before then, just in case. That's my philosophy, anyway; to each their own.

The AV install is part of Ninite, since I use MS Security Essentials. Drivers I don't really do in a particular order (other than graphics going first), and I tend to just install a bunch of things at the same time (so drivers might be installing at the same time as Ninite). Getting security running isn't too high of a priority, because any drivers and basic programs are from trusted sources; I'll absolutely have it installed before normal use, but it's not a big deal for me to be downloading drivers or VLC or whatever else without it.

Also, installing K-Lite codec pack will allow WMP to play it.

Are you sure he sent a .3gp file from his iphone? I was under the assumption that everything was in .mp4 from an iphone?

iTunes can handle it, as well as the other suggestions. To be fair, QuickTime is what handles it.
