Dang. Now I want cancer so that I can use that joke.

My 9 yr old borrowed the camera and this is what I found.

That kid's goin' places.

The fetus is not a person. This is not a difficult concept

Cowboy1985 8 points9 points 2 months ago[-]

That's not a fetus and the concept is not so black and white, so it probably is difficult.

I don't know why this protest sign makes me laugh so much.

Cowboy1985 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

It has to be. It's a "taking back the night" protest thing. What we have here is a two-for-one gem.

Out of curiosity...how many guys have done this?

I'm generally terrified of female hygenic products -- so there's no way this is ever happening with me.

No. You're only creating things to respond to. First, the comparisons you drew -- ie. PETA dumping animal corpses in a back alley, etc. -- are examples of undermining an organization by damaging their name/reputation. Or libel. Your assumptions and assertions about what the article insinuates are dishonest or at least selective. Why don't you get indignant on behalf of citizens of Idaho? Or Florida? Why not get upset over how the TEA Party is represented? Libertarians? Or Republicans -- they seem to take the biggest shot in the end of the story. How about coming to the defense of the Idaho politicians mentioned in the story? How about defending the Drug Enforcement Agency? This story could just as easily be a bizzaro representation of the TEA Party and people who simply find things to be outraged about rather than responding to the actual political realities (you come to mind). It could just as easily be about how over-enthusiastic groups sometimes lead individuals to abandon rationality and replace it with the mob mentality. Spoofing the mob mentality in the nation seems the more likely moral of the story -- which I happen to know for a fact is the case, because the guy that wrote the story is someone I work with. When I showed him your accusations he just laughed.

What you were describing earlier has a name, it's called "Libel". If anything you've said were actually true, then organizations like "The Onion" should be sued into oblivion with pretty much everything they say/write/do. The fact that you are finding some "point" being argued or attempting to be "proved" probably says more about you than the actual article itself. http://www.spring.org.uk/2010/02/why-the-media-seems-biased-when-you-care-about-the-issue.php What point, besides just the ability to laugh about the America's political scene, is the article trying to make?

It still highlights how ridiculous things are in this country, politically speaking.

Another Alan Watts book called The Wisdom of Insecurity. At the time I had read quite a bit of Nietzsche, some Aristotle, some Heidegger, some Thomas Paine, C.S. Lewis, Sam Harris' first book, and a few others. I was only 19 or 20, and had flunked out of high school and had never given serious consideration to the possibility that I could attend a university. These guys, Bob Dylan, serving at a homeless shelter run by Christians (I was leaning towards atheism while working with them), and hitting up some of the Nashville, Tennessee art scene had essentially been my education up to that point. As you might imagine, a kid with no actual teacher or anyone to help guide him at 19 or 20, my head was swirling with thoughts and ideas that I wasn't sure I could handle. Just when I was about to have a total breakdown I stumbled across this book at a B&N. I didn't have any money so I read as much as I could in the store, but as the store was about to close, I found 20 bucks just laying in the middle of some aisle. I bought the book and read it in 1 day. I was able to just let go, be comfortable with not knowing things (don't twist that), embrace things without attachment or fear, I became interested in many other fields of study (as Watts would say: "to be interesting, one must be INTERSTED"), and developed much more deep and meaningful relationships in my life because I was able to kinda see through problems rather than see just a problem. Great book and great thinker, though I suspect that if you think you REALLY understand Watts -- you don't (me included).

Your update alone was worth the upvote.

I don't get this "God gave his only son" thing. If Jesus died from this shitty earth and went to awesome heaven, how is that even a sacrifice?

probably should have posted this to r/christianity, or something, to have them "explain" it.

Rand Paul Holds Big Leads In Kentucky Senate Primary, General Election

Cowboy1985 2 points3 points 4 months ago[-]

I'm not quite as big a fan of Rand, but I live in Kentucky and he's gonna win. He's better at playing politics than his dad, he's softened his rhetoric, embraced certain endorsements, and has done pretty good at working the media. He's basically come from "no chance" last summer to "safe bet" in about 8 or 9 months. I'm very much in favor of his idea for Senate term limits, and if one had the chance to see him in July/August/September 2009, when there was less of a filter -- he's pretty cool.

So much art is WTF material. this is no exception. (nsfw)

I'm begging you, please begin posting her comments and such. You can title it: "Kristina's Komments" and then give it a date. Or even start a blog with her comments, and give it an RSS feed so I can subscribe. They don't all need to be that funny, I'm just suddenly fascinated by what goes on in this girls head.

Ask r/libertarian - as a newish lib, I'm trying to understand certain aspects of the belief. Currently, the opinion on secession/Abe Lincoln, etc...

Cowboy1985 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I'm referencing the numerous concessions that were made by so many founders, even concessions that ran against their notions of what true freedom means (slavery, certain tax policies, some districting plans, and even some concessions with banking in order to ensure an efficienct gov't) for the sake of preserving the union. I think claiming the union had failed the Southerners is too sweeping and a difficult statement to make. There are far too many tedious details to make generalizations. I'm sure you know that. Decisions made way in advance of the Civil War, even the Philadelphia Convention, were building up towards the War.

http://www.lneilsmith.org/abelenin.html http://sourcedmock.blogspot.com/2009/12/libertarian-ranking-of-united-states.html Lincoln took America off of a sound money system and empowered a nationalized banking system build off of debt. He suspended habeus corpus and could be notoriously severe against political combatants. He wielded near dictator powers for a while. Some Libertarians think he should have let the south secede instead of waging a war that was based on the idea that we should be united. Though, it's quite clear that the founders considered the union remaining unbroken to be vital to the survival of the nation. I happen to think some Libertarians are a bit too harsh on Lincoln. Maybe there were other ways around the war, maybe not. It's kinda hard to say with real certainty. The links are, IMO, unjustifiably harsh, but still worth hearing. Lincoln as an individual personality is notoriously hard to pin down. He's as complicated as anyone can be, so you can find nearly anything you want in him.
