I always see book suggestion threads, but what about essays? What are your favorite or thought-provoking essays?

Lycur 0 points1 point 28 days ago[-]

It's almost hard to believe that this wasn't a fully premeditated piece of writing.

George Orwell's Some Thoughts on the Common Toad

It's beautifully written and singularly uplifting.

I can't believe an animal this silly-looking actually EXISTS!

Nice weather and a looming weekend can make it tough to be properly outraged ;-)

Sup reddit, I heard you guys like feminism, so I printscreened you this:

Lycur 0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]

This is a form of feminism only in the same sense that taxation is a form of socialism. It's technically true, but using feminism as a descriptor for this tripe violates both the spirit of feminism in a modern understanding and the colloquial use of the word in a way which amounts to nothing more than an ad absurdum attack.

What movie lines make you tear up?

Lycur 2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]

Sixth Sense.

This is probably the single most poignant criticism of this woman that's appeared in this comment thread.

Do you ACTUALLY have a Kindle?

Lycur 0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]

I have a PRS-600. I still prefer paper, but the device makes for a damn close second.

Who remembers The Giver?

Lycur 6 points7 points 1 month ago[-]

I am very much interested in the answers to these questions.

Hey Guys, can anybody suggest any good science fiction/fantasy books?

Lycur 0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]

He comes off as a slightly more impatient version of Spock, that's nuts. I still highly recommend going through the first few books though.

What's that? You think you might be too old? Wrong. Go read this again, now.

I thought they were all pretty solid. Not the best novels ever perhaps, but definitely not 'pretty bad'.

Football fandom.

I visited there when I was ~14, well below the drugs and hookers age. The city oozes an amazing amount of history; it was a wonderful experience. The legal drugs aspect is probably overblown, but it's a worthwhile visit even without that.

A Song of Ice and Fire is the best epic fantasy series I've perused. Steven Erikson and Glen Cook are also both very good.

Asimov, and in particular the Foundation series, is really good sci-fi. I also just finished A Memory of Whiteness, which I absolutely loved.

Puts the reddit Isreali outrage into some perspective

Lycur 0 points1 point 2 months ago[-]

Yes, which is a legitimate point to criticize. What's disturbing is the apparently common belief (on reddit) that Israeli soldiers just went aboard and massacred protesters for the fun of it. The willful suspension of cynicism when it comes to pretty much anything alleged against Israel would be comedic if it didn't have such vitriolic overtones.

Hey Reddit, can we do a thread on which Colleges/Universities are represented on here? Just post your school and upvote that specific school if you attend there.

I originally read your name as pepisisthebest, and I agreed fully. Soda I have less stringent views on.

Can somebody explain this comic please

Lycur 1 point2 points 5 months ago[-]

Upvoted for what the hell.

Obama Signs One Year Extension of Patriot Act (which he used to oppose)

Lycur 0 points1 point 5 months ago[-]

But one thing is certain: This reddit headline is, in one short sentence, misleading in at least two ways.

Seriously, it's really not clear to me what the agenda of the people posting this tripe is. They can't possibly fail to realize that they're being deliberately misleading, but it's not the least be clear to me how they could possibly profit from this shit.

I'm an engineering major, and I drew this comic

Lycur 0 points1 point 5 months ago[-]

Speaking as a physics major, I lack sympathy.

Can you help me find an older XKCD comic?

Lycur 0 points1 point 5 months ago[-]

I'm almost certain that this is not an xkcd comic.

Forget Mars, the moon, the oceans, the seas, and underground. Let's focus on making our actual cities livable.

Lycur -5 points-4 points 6 months ago[-]

I'll make the obligatory remark about how a) it's a relatively small amount of money and b) why are you singling out Isreal as a recipient of funding? yadda yadda yadda, get your head out of your ass.

Reddit, I have a problem with Premature Ejaculation. Does anyone have any advice?

Lycur -1 points0 points 6 months ago[-]

Have some liquid beforehand, needing to pee a little bit helps alot.

So CBS is allowing Focus On The Family to run a 30-second ad during the Super Bowl that will preach the virtues of bigotry, misogyny, and a Christian worldview, but said no to a Moveon.org ad 2 years ago because the spot violated the network's policy against running issue advocacy advertising.

Lycur 5 points6 points 6 months ago[-]

Both are (at least by political standards) accurate enough descriptors, in that the ministry is both homophobic and endorses, at least in part, traditional family roles. However, the article made it sound like the ad was a straight out pro life schill, which is still pretty clearly pushing an agenda.

Sarah Palin gets $100,000 for IN TOUCH magazine cover and Bristol says she's a born again VIRGIN? WTF is that?

Lycur 2 points3 points 6 months ago[-]

Could we please stop caring about this woman now? Thanks.

Would you have spotted this, or would you have given the thieves your ATM card info & PIN without suspecting a thing?

Lycur 7 points8 points 6 months ago[-]

If you're in a reasonably large city there may well be a bicycle recycling non-profit in town. If there is, you can get quite good bikes for as little as $20-30.
