hi 'lived their' welcome to the english language.

NYC! Recommend me the best pizza place! GO!

imitationcheese 4 points5 points 9 days ago[-]

l&b. hands down the best pizza i've ever had, and i've had it all.

but you've gotta make the trek to practically to coney island.

Any New Yorkers planning on moving out of the city, or ex-Pat New Yorkers. Where are you planning on moving/did you move? How is life outside of the big city.

imitationcheese 1 point2 points 17 days ago[-]

boston.

food is surprisingly not as bad as nyc food snobbery would suggest, but it is more limited.

one problem is that traffic in new york actually makes sense, where as in boston it's just inefficient, chaotic, and not even on a grid.

the worst though, is that like many other cities and most suburbs, is that everything closes super early. i loved walking around at 3am seeing people out an about. i loved going to the park in the middle of the night. i loved that restaurants are packed for dinner at 10 or 11pm. here they close at 9 or 10pm, and they really want you out.

The end of a legend: Helen Thomas announces her retirement.

imitationcheese 11 points12 points 1 month ago* [-]

people have said thomas's comment is like telling blacks to go back to africa. that's a really poor comparison. the best one is telling ex-slave descendents that moved to liberia, who enslaved (and have pretty consistently held political power over) original liberians, to go back to america.

yeah, the liberian elite isn't originally from the US. and they are originally from africa. but their behavior upon moving back hasn't exactly made the power they hold deserved. same goes for israelis.

thomas's comment was politically dumb, but the content of it really isn't that offensive, it's just hyperbolic and impractical.

Does anyone else feel like NYC is a remarkably safe place?

imitationcheese 2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]

I just walked across Central Park at 3am last night with my girlfriend. Neither one of us was wearing running gear in case we wanted to sprint away from muggers. We saw a woman walking across the park by herself, and then 10 minutes later saw a woman wearing high heels and a fancy dress also walking by herself across the park. This wasn't possible 20 years ago in the city.

FOX 'News' refers to Michigan 'Hutaree' Apocalyptic Militia alleged terrorists as "Captured Warriors"

imitationcheese 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

The NYT and AP both did not call this group a terrorist group despite their being a political group conspiring to kill a police officer, bomb a funeral, and incite an antigovernment uprising. By any legal definition, this is terrorism.

Obama starts acting a whole lot more like Bush - uses his power to bypass Congress and make appointments when they're away

imitationcheese [S] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Bush did this, which is Constitutional but controversial, when the Democrats politically held up appointments. Good for Obama FINALLY starting to do the same after many many months and, as you said, far more appointments being held up. Not sure what all the hate is about, it sounds like we're on the same page.

Binyamin Netanyahu humiliated after Barack Obama walked out of meeting when Netanyahu refused to halt settlement expansion

Oh for sure the Daily Mail. But even this is pretty tabloid-y. Definitely no Guardian or BBC.

The Guardian's account is more tempered.

Dear Reddit: I need your help for a good cause. Brain tumour research fundraiser.

imitationcheese 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I apologize for the downvote when this is obviously a personal matter for you, and I hope an explanation will help.

a) I don't think the non-profit subreddit really should be about fundraising. Every time someone submits a call for donations it dilutes actual content. Perhaps there ought be a fundraising subreddit. b) Even if fundraising was cool, personal fundraising efforts are less so. c) Even if personal fundraising efforts are cool, people who give (and definitely those who ask for) "charity" have a major responsibility - to ensure that their money leads to the most impact. I know this issue is personal for you, but this organization provides very little impact per given donation. Check out givewell for more on this attitude toward giving - I don't agree with their methodology 100% but the values behind it are perfect. Soup kitchens, brain cancer awareness, and make a wish foundation don't lead to systemic change, they don't address the greatest inequitable sufferings on our planet, and I think advocating for these initiatives reflects a lack of critical thinking about impact. I hope you'll reconsider.

Again you call this blog post an "article." Words matter. You're giving this opinion a lot of legitimacy. Really the meta-analysis only makes for a controversy that legitimately begs more research, but does not represent a nail in the coffin.

Grayson asking for citizen support of a 4 page bill. It lets anyone buy into Medicare at cost. What do you think Reddit?

imitationcheese -1 points0 points 4 months ago[-]

That chart is salary or net income. It is the median for the country, and is actually higher in California.

As I near completion of my medical training I have to say that I am disgusted by this argument.

Doctors are grossly overpaid, mainly bc there has been a long history of limiting the number of training spots even as the US grew. This decreased supply has predictably led to doctors being overpaid.

Average income income is well above $100,000 for every specialty. Paying off debt in 20 years would only reduce your salary by $10-20k per year. Most doctors make in excess of $200,000.

Median salaries by specialty: http://www.aafp.org/online/etc/medialib/aafp_org/documents/press/charts-and-graphs/median-income-by-specialty.Par.0001.File.tmp/MedianIncome2008FINAL.pdf

this is where the media needs to play a more responsible role. these reports are concerning and necessitate further study, but based on what they're saying it would be such a small number of fractures caused compared to the number of fractures averted...

i dislike raw veggies.

so what i do is toss a shit ton into whatever i cook. even simple stuff like pasta and sauce. instead of 100% noodles, make it like 50% vege.

Increase the amount of vegetable you eat during meals. And drink water during the meal. You will feel satiated sooner, and will quickly lose weight.
