Why Shirley Sherrod cannot win her defamation case against Andrew Breitbart

marshallt 0 points1 point 2 days ago[-]

I would think she would be considered a limited public figure since she's not famous and does not hold an elected position. It seems she could have a strong case for at least false light and she can prove real damages.

Glenn Beck cites the Communist Goals of 1963, yet "forgets" to mention that some dude made them up (explanation in comments)

Because they're not representative in the least of what I believe.

There's a great story on Salon.com about why Beck loves Skousen. I'm a Mormon, too, but I think they're both douche bags of the highest order.

Palin's Oil Spill Solution. (Even Bill O'Reilly can't hide his contempt for her incoherent stupidity in this clip)

You're right. We do need to stop the gusher. It's brilliant.

Bill O'Reilly is a douche bag, but he knows which way the wind blows. I think Palin is on her way out.

Dear Reddit, I'm writing from Kathmandu where I'm helping Apa Sherpa with his record-breaking Mount Everest attempt. He's doing it to raise awareness about global warming and Sherpa rights. Please take a moment and wish him luck. That is all.

I think I just coined the phrase, but the short answer is yes. They must speak Nepali or English in school. If not they will be beaten. They also get paid a fraction of what Western guides get paid despite the fact that they are the experts and carry the heaviest loads.

Why is Helen Thomas the only one in Washington willing to ask the hard questions?

marshallt 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Red the Boy on the Bus. It explains it all. It's the same reason that Hunter S. Thompson was the only one who would ask tough questions as well.

Dear Reddit: Please take a moment and wish Apa Sherpa good luck. He leaves tomorrow to climb Mount Everest for the 20th time.

This time, he's climbing to raise money for educational and economic development. He's climbing this last time so that other Sherpas won't be forced to climb out of economic necessity.

Appropriately, the Tea Party logo looks like a dick wrapped in a flag.

They had to have done this on purpose. It is a dick wrapped in a flag. That's all there is to it.

Conan O'Brien's Twitter stunt turns tear-jerker

I thought that was a great article. Well written and pleasantly surprising.

Liz Cheney, have you no sense of decency?

marshallt 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

I find it particularly interesting that the Red Scare tactics that Cheney is promoting were once used against homosexuals as well. It seems like human nature to ignore the past and the sacrifices others made for our freedoms while we work tirelessly to limit the rights of the next group. Cheney has no shame, but she also has no grasp of modern history or irony.

My piece of shit congressman resigned today over ethics violations: Can we fire them all and start over?

marshallt 3 points4 points 4 months ago[-]

My Congressman is Rob Bishop (R-UT) and he's a class A mormon. Go ahead and get rid of him. But what did Massa do that was so terrible? Sexual harassment? What did he say that was so bad that he had to resign over it?

Teenager arrested for listening to what police deem "offensive" rap music

Police are expected to play Kid Selzy's latest album, The Creepshow, at the next hearing.

Can't they get arrested for that?

Answer to Terrorism? I hope my teacher is wrong...

marshallt 6 points7 points 5 months ago[-]

That's easy. Let's look specifically at the most devastating terrorist attack in our lifetime and compare it to the U.S. reaction to it. On Sept. 11, terrorists killed about 3,000 people.

The U.S. reaction to that attack was to go to war in Afghanistan and in Iraq. The conservative estimate of civilians deaths caused by direct U.S. military action in Afghanistan is more than 5,000 people). If you look at indirect deaths because of the Afghanistan War, it's much higher.

In Iraq, about 100,000 people have died because of the war we started without provocation, ostensibly as a reaction to 9/11.

So, here are the numbers you asked for:

Terrorists: 3,000 civilian deaths

U.S. reaction to terrorists: 105,000 civilian deaths

How does that make sense?

marshallt 3 points4 points 5 months ago[-]

More directly, compare the number of people terrorists have killed in the last decade to the number the U.S. military has killed in the last decade as a reaction to terrorism.

You can never destroy all those who threaten peace and security. As you attempt to, you create more and more enemies until eventually you are weakened and outnumbered. The only way to ensure long term peace and stability is through cooperation, communication by identifying mutual benefits and maximizing them. That said, I believe your "teacher" is under the assumption that there is some sort of international conspiracy of terrorists who are jealous of our liberty. This simply isn't true. There are terrorist organizations that are unreasonable and should be hunted down and put in jail. There are others who could legitimately make the argument that their actions are justified by the same rational your teacher is promoting. So, the first step toward better national security would be to learn more about our "enemies" and truly develop some empathy. Then we can rationally and logical look for ways to maximize our shared best interests.

Just got into Berkeley, Master's in Social Welfare. Is it worth the mountain of debt?

marshallt 1 point2 points 5 months ago[-]

I'm not suggesting that you kick him in the nuts so hard that it causes him to feel pain or suffering equal with death and organ failure. I'm just talking about a good old fashion American nut-kicking. Oh and good luck with grad scool.

If you take the opportunity to find Professor Yoo and kick him in the nuts, then I think it would be worth it.
