"The customer is always right?" Fuck you

mrzubi 19 points20 points 2 days ago[-]

I was in a carpool once as a kid and the mother of this kid was always the worst when it was her turn. She always picked us up late, and always in a car too small for all of us.

One time she got so mad that we were messing with her car and her stuff that she turned around and screamed "Keep your damn hands in your lap!"

We sat silent for the remainder of the carpool until we were dropping off one of the kids. The kid's sister came out and talked to another kid in the car and she yelled from far away "I didnt know you were in this car! How come you didnt say hi or wave to me?"

at which time the kid screamed back "I would... but I have to keep my DAMN HANDS IN MY LAP!"

We spent the rest of the car ride trying not to laugh so loud.

The design teams for these companies know that packaging design is a harmful art. It is the first one we can remove without effecting any other way of life, and it can save a lot of resources.

This cheap thrill last for two seconds, and while it may make a few extra purchases, it doesnt change how the earphones sound.

This is the battle I want to fight.

.. but that packaging costs the environment way more then the cleverness adds.

My Consumer Manifesto: A proposed future where the consumer is in control of the ads they see online.

They might be doing something slightly similar, but I dont search for adidas shorts, mrs renfros salsa, or banana republic clothing. They are doing the best they can by advertising based on search queries and keywords. My plan involves waving a big flag at Google that tells them exactly the brands and products that I like. If they want to take that info and tweak it, that would still be better than their current guessing game IMO.

I'm glad we have the same utopian vision, which I guess I understand is not ever completely obtainable. I am hoping though that there is some happy medium where we freely give up some of our anonymity and the guesswork in exchange for more relevant ads.

I tried to address that concept by saying that ads you see would be partly:

  • brands you like, but new products from that brand

  • products related to products you like based on others suggestions (20 of your friends like this product, or 100 people who also like product x, like product z)

  • products from categories you like (photography, mexican food, etc.)

  • a quarter of the ads you see would be standard advertising

The scholarships are not school related, rather they are based on merit and need. I talked to an admissions officer and he told me merit to him would be someone involved in outdoor education to some degree and in a position to pass on the knowledge learned through a NOLS course.

Disclaimer: I work at NOLS HQ in Wyoming, I am also a grad.

There is also a video contest going on through October 31st where you submit a video talking about what your dream expedition is, and how you would prepare for it. The kicker is that the first prize is a NOLS course + gear + travel. (http://www.nols.edu/contest)

Reddit. Today is day 2 of not smoking. Do you guys have any tips/pointers for me?

mrzubi 0 points1 point 5 days ago[-]

Exercise. I stopped smoking after I realized how much I was able to hike, jog, etc even one day without cigarettes.

Plus you wont want to smoke after working out anyway.

This is baby Mila. Mila’s mom is bored on maternity leave, and figured out a fun hobby. When Mila takes a nap, her mom Adele imagines what she’s dreaming of, and sets up things around her with whatever Adele has on hand and takes a picture.

What are jake brakes? And have you ever used a truck runaway ramp? Is it everything I always thought it would be? Whats the most beautiful road you've been on?

Why do you pass a truck right in front of me on a two-lane highway only to slow down next to the truck? Or worse.. You you pin me inbetween two trucks and next to another truck! Are you guys laughing at me over your radios? Do you know how much it scares the hell out of me?

Reddit, I'm 21 today! What should I do to celebrate? I WILL do your most upvoted suggestion!

except for the fact that you think you are the prince of clowns now.

I have a site called Kongregate and am leading a panel on browser based games tech with people from Adobe Flash, Microsoft IE, Unity Player, and Google's game advocate. What should I ask them?

My girlfriend and I are in a long distance relationship. We need games that are easy to start up and play with or against each other. Currently omgpop.com is our best solution but it also seems like the only place to play games that accommodate private roomed multiplayer experience. Why aren't there more places like this online?

I think the only argument I can make is that this football player is responsible for bringing in millions of dollars of revenue for the school which goes to scholarships and new facilities that everyone benefits from. Hopefully he is learning there too.

In 1962, with Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring," I think for people like me in the world of the making of things, the canary in the mine wasn't singing. And so the question that we might not have birds became kind of fundamental to those of us wandering around looking for the meadowlarks that seemed to have all disappeared. And the question was, were the birds singing?

Now, I'm not a scientist, that'll be really clear. But, you know, we've just come from this discussion of what a bird might be. What is a bird? Well, in my world, this is a rubber duck. It comes in California with a warning -- "This product contains chemicals known by the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm." This is a bird. What kind of culture would produce a product of this kind and then label it and sell it to children?

I think we have a design problem.

These are the kind of full on retards we have to deal with in Wyoming.

mrzubi 3 points4 points 19 days ago[-]

I keep forgetting that part of it. I still wish we didn't have to kill them to make them healthy. When I try to think of an argument related to humans I get into too many conspiracy theories and my head starts to hurt.

That's why they call it moron junction! (actually Moran Jct.) I drive to Jackson from Lander all the time and see these idiots out there trying to get close. These people are fascinated by wildlife but wouldn't hike 1/4 of a mile in a trail to save their life.

Unrelated Rant: Another thing I don't like about the area is that with the elk refuge outside of Jackson, WY. Hunters just sit in their cars are wait for elk to come down out of the mountain for the refuge. Right before they are safe for the winter, they have to make it through a barrage of bullets. Also, they shoot elk in the refuge sometimes to thin out the herd. Fucking disgusting.
