What do you consider to be a huge waste of time/effort and avoid doing it whenever possible?

sanalin 0 points1 point 11 hours ago[-]

A few dates and already being clingy. Talking about how moving in together would look, mostly in passing. Being insecure about himself, which usually results in intense jealousy issues.

I was like 20 at the time. No thanks.

/r/fitness LADIES: what do you find attractive in a guy?

sanalin 0 points1 point 1 day ago[-]

I'm a gay guy and I like long lashes.

Upvote for truth. I agree in my own usage, but other people may not have been to the areas in question and just lump them together. I was trying to be fair to that usage.

If I were to want to get an RFID reader to scan and see what all's available on me, how what kind would I need to get? Does anyone have any beginner level info on this stuff? After I get home, I plan on watching the rest of her talk there.

I'm happy as long as I don't have the Princess Swayback look.

Honestly, I do kind of slouch, so I've been trying to improve it for a while. Sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day kind of ruins any improvements I make though.

The southeast as generally referenced in the US is the south.

Sometimes Texas is included in that, but I think in most minds, but even west Texas has such a different climate than the more watered and green south that it's hard to consider it such.

I think of the states west of Louisiana as the west, and then hitting the states along the coast, the west coast.

Probably just one of the normal 5. I give myself too much credit for the butch factor of hurtling through the asphalt jungle at 40 miles an hour. I think the upright positioning of my spine made me look regal and queenly.

"I don't know how that happened, officer. It must have cracked when he tried to run me over while screaming slurs."

I hope he overpaid to have it fixed!

I spent about 7 bucks a week on gas for most of the time I had it. That bumped up to about 20 at one point, because I was taking summer classes after my major moved downtown from where I was living in tempe. 30+ minutes each way since I couldn't take the interstate, and I had class twice a day and work in between that, so I was driving quite a bit. I'd say it was at least 80mpg. It only held 1.5 gallons.

You might look in to motor assisted bikes too, if you've got to deal with hills. That's pretty much the point of them as far as I can tell..evens out the amount of work you have to do going up the hills so that you get a less exhausting commute. There were some threads on it a few months ago on /r/bicycling

How can I plan ahead to earn the best possible return on the sale of my home?

sanalin 4 points5 points 1 day ago[-]

Plant some trees.

Home renovations hardly ever result in a positive return, so I'd stick to just sprucing up the obvious stuff: make sure your carpets and floors are clean and in good shape, make sure the electrical stuff works and all your connections are good, etc.

Fresh paint is never a bad idea. It's relatively inexpensive and you can do it yourself over a few weekends. When you're painting a house that you want to make a long term living space, you might go with more color. For resale, you should look at neutrals that anyone could move in and be able to furnish. That's why apartment walls are almost always eggshell or beige.

I think of talking behind peoples' backs as gossip. As in I know them and I'm divulging information to other people who know them without their knowledge or consent. I do try to avoid that.

This was plain and simple some drunk sorority girl complaining about having had too much to drink the night before, complaining about how others acted when they had too much to drink, and otherwise being ridiculous. And doing this in public, no less. I think it was worth a comment if only to reinforce expectations that being unable to hold your liquor is not socially acceptable.

I've found this to be the most effective advice.

I went on like two dates with someone once. I was friends with a friend of his (mostly in passing, we weren't that close.) When he made me uncomfortable at one point, I decided I didn't want to see him again. I told him so, and I think he went and bitched to her, probably just a venting thing. She then comes and is like, "WHAT? So you're the only one who gets to decide when it's over?"

Uh, yes. It's my life. If I don't want to waste my time on someone, then I won't. The end.

I actually had more of a problem with getting yelled at by motorists in Phoenix than in the south.

No one wants to roll their windows down in this humidity, is probably the main reason.

When I drove a scooter I got called fag at least twice a month.

While true, I don't know how they'd know from my incredible MPG scooter.

You're probably right. That's probably exactly what happened.

Still, as you said, anyone who would actually say nasty shit like that to someone else in public unprovoked (and even if they thought they were being judged, no one screamed at them, so it's unprovoked) is just rude.

For example, I was with friends having sushi yesterday. This girl was like, "Oh my god [boyfriend], you were so sexually inappropriate last night. And seriously [other random friend there], why didn't you pick up the phone when I texted you? I SAIIIID FML. It was seriously an emergency-911 text. I threw up like 4 times and didn't know where I was."

I didn't say a word until we were in the car! That's what polite people do.

What keeps you in shape?

sanalin 0 points1 point 1 day ago[-]

I have health insurance provided by my employer. The problem is meeting my deductible, which is more of an issue since I just switched providers. I'm looking at another job where I'd have to wait 3 months to get on their benefits, so getting it done now might be beneficial...

I'm really not keen on taking 3 weeks off the progress I've been making to deal with it, since patient preference is a large factor in when to get it excised. I guess I could do a 1 month cut and just focus on cardio and body weight stuff in a worst case scenario.

sanalin 0 points1 point 1 day ago[-]

Sounds exciting.

My doc and then the specialist he recommended both refused to drain it. I'm convinced it's a monetary refusal, since having to excise it must cost more. The bill alone for the visits was ridiculous, which is why I've just been sucking it up for weight lifting. Guess it'll be something I have to make a decision on if I want to do more fun things though.

sanalin 0 points1 point 1 day ago[-]

My issue is a ganglion cyst in my right wrist. That stops me from really seriously looking into anything like this or parkour. Maybe that's a good reason to seriously consider excisement despite what it'll probably cost. Have you ever dealt with anyone who had a similar issue?

Pain's fine. I had a piercing thing for a while.

DAE rinse their workout clothes in the shower so they can reuse them multiple times before a proper wash?

sanalin 0 points1 point 1 day ago[-]

I just reuse the shorts as they are. I've got enough crappy tshirts that waiting until my regular wash isn't a big deal.

The Problem Isn't Just People Against Gay Adoption; It's People Against Adoption

sanalin 3 points4 points 1 day ago[-]

Good post, both touching and solid on the factoids.

I'm adopted also, and I've experienced very similar conversations when people stumble on to it. It's weird, because I never felt particularly weird about having to explain to people that I'm gay, because I got the practice doing it as an adoptee. The coming out parallels are very similar, and adoption law is another place where major reform needs to occur.

Here in Louisiana, this is an issue that keeps coming up on the ballot every session. I wish that I had a job where I could make it to those hearings as a constituent.

You might like to read Irresistable Revolution. It's a little more religion based than some people might like, but he's got some really cool stories about moving in to lower income neighborhoods and actually enacting his values.

One example, there were some people squatting in an abandoned church, and he and some friends helped them spruce it up and make it more liveable. They got too much attention though, and the fire marshall scheduled a visit to check for firecode stuff to find a reason to evict them. Two firemen showed up the night before to help them make sure their exit signs worked and everything else was up to code, so the people got to stay.
