Tononi's book explained consciousness in non reductionistic yet intuitive terms. I find the notion of integrated information amazing.

Yes, and if by absurd all protocols fail, then copying with portable HDD would be totally untraceable and one order of magnitude easier than P2P filesharing because in one swoop one could get a terabyte of content.

If one downloads a torrent and also uploads, on average the upload is equal to the download (think for the whole swarm). So a member to the swarm is guilty of uploading 1 copy, then liability should not be greater than the digital value of the movie, that is 10 bucks or something. The strong arm scare tactics they use and the 150K$ per infringement they vehiculate is bullshit. Nobody takes them seriously when they talk like that.
More realistically, they should ask a maximum equal to the ammount people spend on average - that is - 20...100$ per month (I don't have the statistics). For a whole year of infringement, the loss they incurred is at most 1000$ per person, but I think it is even less. They shouldn't be able to ask for more. It's not fair to ask for more than people would have spent on content.

How language shapes culture: when time flows from East to West
visarga 5 points6 points7 points 7 days ago[-]
Every internally cohesive group (like reddit) develops its own private language. We have our memes and injokes.

From TFA:
Charlemagne proclaimed that "to have a second language is to have a second soul."
Funny, I was thinking that with each new language I become fluent in, I expand my mental space proportionally. I can speak 3 languages (2 fluently and one at medium level) so I feel like my thinking has 3 dimensions while people with only one language have only that one dimension to host their thoughts. That's why it pays to learn languages that are very different, like Japanese - you get rich interferences and interesting "aha!" moments.

Japanese consider this one of the most dreadful experiences. Some daredevils muster up the courage and say hello to tourists in English, then go home and tell everyone how they survived the experience. There are English teachers in Japan who couldn't order a hamburger in English, in a real life situation. They just teach students how to pass exams.
English is stupid.
Well, you can thank skritch for teaching you about the existence of Google :-) Not every other day you find such a great website!
Being ignorant of the etymology does not make the language stupid. "being" is a participle describing "language,"

Just how completely has Apple humiliated the cellphone industry?
visarga -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 days ago* [-]
And now consider the next shocking chart. Apple will generate 2X as much handset profit as the rest of the industry combined this year DESPITE SELLING ONLY 3% OF THE HANDSETS BY UNIT VOLUME
I see no reason to celebrate Apple's higher profit margins. That just means they are ripping us off or that the rest of the industry gives a better value per buck. The AT&T deal comes to mind. Externalizing AT&T's problems on us for better profits by limiting the handsets to work only on their network. It was a dick move, contrary to Apple's supposed principles of excellence.

Those 200 billion hours spent on TV are hostage to our pleasure seeking instincts. Fighting the urge to seek pleasure instead of being creative has been one of the essential problems of humanity. It's not like we just discovered temptation. How do you motivate a 8 year old to seek reading and enjoy his math? How do you make an adult more involved and passionate about his work?
Just stating the problem doesn't help much. We need solutions that work. Until then we're going to see the same tragedy repeat itself day by day.
